Uganda’s Two Gorilla Parks: An Honest Comparison
Uganda offers gorilla trekking in two national parks: the vast and famous Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and the smaller, less-visited Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Both charge the same permit price and both deliver the same fundamental experience — one hour with habituated mountain gorillas in their natural forest habitat. But the two parks are fundamentally different in size, character, and what they offer beyond the gorilla encounter. Understanding those differences helps you decide which is right for your trip.

The Numbers Speak: Ten Families vs One
Bwindi hosts ten habituated gorilla families open to trekking, plus additional families under habituation or reserved for the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Mgahinga has one: the Nyakagezi family, a group of around 11 individuals. This numerical difference has practical consequences that extend far beyond mere variety.
With ten families across four sectors, Bwindi offers genuine choice. You can select a family based on trail difficulty, sector atmosphere, or reported recent sightings. If one family is temporarily inaccessible due to unusual movement patterns, rangers have nine other options. The probability of any individual trek failing to find gorillas at Bwindi is already very low (above 98% success rate); the ten-family system provides multiple layers of redundancy that a single-family park cannot match.
Sector Diversity: Four Distinct Experiences
Bwindi’s four sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo — each offer a distinct character and appeal.
Buhoma is the original gorilla trekking sector, established in 1993. It has the most developed infrastructure, the widest range of accommodation, and a welcoming, community-integrated atmosphere. The Rushegura and Habinyanja families are well-known and reliably found. Buhoma suits travellers who value established quality and community tourism experiences.
Ruhija sits at higher altitude, around 2,350 metres, offering cooler temperatures, fewer visitors, and exceptional birding. The Bitukura and Oruzogo families are relatively recent habituations with interesting dynamics. Ruhija suits birders and travellers seeking a quieter experience.
Rushaga hosts the most gorilla families of any sector, including the large Nshongi group and the Kahungye family. Its lower altitude, warmer temperatures, and range of budget accommodation make it the most accessible for travellers on tight schedules and budgets.
Nkuringo is the most dramatic and challenging sector, perched on a steep ridge with sweeping views into Congo. The physically demanding terrain adds adventure to the experience. Nkuringo suits fit travellers seeking the most remote, atmospheric gorilla encounter.
Mgahinga, by contrast, offers a single trekking experience from a single trailhead. There is no sector choice, no family selection, and no alternative if conditions or preferences change.
The Ancient Forest: Biodiversity Depth
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is estimated to be 25,000 years old, one of Africa’s oldest and most biodiverse ecosystems. Its 321 square kilometres contain over 1,000 flowering plant species, 350 bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, 120 mammal species, and more. The forest itself is a destination, not merely a backdrop for the gorilla encounter.
Many Bwindi visitors who trek in the morning spend afternoons on guided nature walks, bird watching, or cultural visits to local communities. The forest rewards extended exploration in ways that Mgahinga’s smaller, more recently developed forest cannot.
Mgahinga does offer unique biodiversity — golden monkeys, volcanic landscape, and high-altitude moorland — but it cannot match Bwindi’s depth of ancient tropical forest experience.
The Gorilla Habituation Experience
Bwindi is the only park in Uganda offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX), a four-hour encounter with a semi-habituated gorilla family costing $1,500 per person. This extended time with gorillas in the early stages of human contact is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences available anywhere on Earth. It is only available at Rushaga sector, Bwindi. Mgahinga does not offer this experience.
Infrastructure and Accommodation Range
Bwindi’s decades as Uganda’s premier wildlife destination have produced an accommodation ecosystem that spans every budget level. From backpacker guesthouses charging $30 to $50 per night to ultra-luxury lodges at $800 to $1,200 per person per night, every type of traveller is served. The range of dining options, community tourism programs, and activity packages makes Bwindi a complete destination rather than a single-activity stop.
Mgahinga’s accommodation options are more limited. Several good lodges operate near the park, but the selection is narrower and competition fewer. For travellers who value accommodation quality, variety, and choice, Bwindi is clearly superior.
Permit Availability
Bwindi’s larger number of habituated families means more total trekking slots available daily. With ten families and eight visitors per family per day, Bwindi can accommodate up to 80 visitors per day across all sectors. Mgahinga, with one family, accommodates a maximum of eight. This makes Bwindi permits easier to obtain, particularly for travellers planning trips at short notice or during peak season.
When Bwindi Is the Clear Choice
Choose Bwindi over Mgahinga when:
You want genuine gorilla family selection and the ability to choose based on fitness level, sector atmosphere, or trail character. You plan to spend multiple days at the park and want varied activities. You want the option of the Gorilla Habituation Experience. You are travelling during peak season and concerned about permit availability. You want the widest range of accommodation options at any budget level. You are primarily interested in the gorillas rather than combining with golden monkeys and volcanoes.
Final Thoughts
Bwindi is Uganda’s premier gorilla destination for reasons that go beyond mere fame. The depth of its forest, the variety of its gorilla families, the range of its accommodation, and the breadth of its activities make it a more complete experience than Mgahinga can offer. For most travellers visiting Uganda specifically for the gorillas, Bwindi is the right choice.
