Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four gorilla trekking sectors. Choosing between them is one of the most important planning decisions for a Uganda gorilla trek in 2027. The Permit Is the Same Everywhere
Before comparing sectors, the foundation: the gorilla trekking permit costs $800 USD per person for foreign non-residents at every Bwindi sector. The permit price does not vary by sector, family, terrain difficulty, or accommodation category. You are comparing the experience around the same $800 permit, not different permit prices.
Buhoma: The Overview
Location: northern Bwindi, accessed from Kabale via Butogota or from Kihihi airstrip. Altitude: approximately 1,500m at briefing point. Gorilla families: Mubare (oldest habituated group in Uganda, habituated 1991), Habinyanja, Rushegura, Katwe. Terrain: moderate, most developed trail infrastructure in Bwindi. Trek duration history: typically moderate (2-5 hours) but variable. Accommodation: most developed lodge scene of any Bwindi sector, from budget guesthouses to luxury properties. Activities beyond gorilla trekking: Buhoma Community Walk, forest trails (Munyaga River Walk, Rushura Hill), excellent birding.
Best for: first-time trekkers, senior travellers, anyone for whom accommodation quality and choice matter, travellers connecting from Kampala via road or from Kihihi airstrip, birders who want accessible birding alongside gorilla trekking. Not ideal for: travellers specifically seeking remote, off-the-beaten-path atmosphere (Buhoma is the most visited sector).
Rushaga: The Overview
Location: southern Bwindi, accessed from Kabale via the southern route or from Kisoro. Altitude: approximately 1,700m at briefing point. Gorilla families: most of any Bwindi sector — Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Busingye, Mucunguzi, Kahungye, and the GHEX family. The GHEX (Gorilla Habituation Experience, $1,800 USD per person) is only available at Rushaga. Terrain: moderate, varied. Trek duration history: variable, depends on family — some Rushaga families have history of shorter treks. Accommodation: growing range from budget guesthouses to quality lodges. Activities: forest walks, community activities, connection to Nkuringo via trail.
Best for: travellers needing good permit availability (more families = more slots), travellers wanting the GHEX experience, travellers connecting from Rwanda (Kigali is approximately 3 hours by road), groups or travellers booking late who need flexibility. Not ideal for: travellers who prioritise accommodation quality over availability (Buhoma has more established luxury options).
Ruhija: The Overview
Location: eastern Bwindi, accessed from Kabale via a different road from Rushaga. Altitude: highest of the four sectors at approximately 2,350m. Gorilla families: Bitukura, Oruzogo, Kyaguriro groups. Terrain: more demanding than Buhoma or Rushaga, higher altitude means more physical effort. Trek duration history: variable; Kyaguriro is a research group so trek conditions differ from standard tourist groups. Accommodation: most limited of the four sectors — a small number of guesthouses and one quality mid-range lodge. Activities: by far the best birding of any Bwindi sector, particularly for Albertine Rift endemics at Mubwindi Swamp (African Green Broadbill, Grauer’s Rush Warbler).
Best for: serious birdwatchers (Ruhija is the primary Uganda destination for Albertine Rift endemic birding), travellers seeking the least-visited, most remote Bwindi atmosphere, and physically fit trekkers who prefer quiet trails. Not ideal for: travellers with accommodation preferences beyond basic, senior travellers or anyone with significant fitness limitations, or travellers for whom the full range of post-trek activities matters.
Nkuringo: The Overview
Location: southwestern Bwindi rim, accessed from Kisoro (rough road, approximately 2 hours). Altitude: one of the highest lodge positions in Bwindi, with views across the Virunga volcanoes. Gorilla families: Nkuringo group and others in the southwestern forest. Terrain: most demanding of all four sectors — steep descent into the forest and return ascent, often the most physically taxing trek in Bwindi. Trek duration history: variable and often at the longer end. Accommodation: limited but scenic — several properties with exceptional Virunga volcano views, including some notable luxury options. Activities: Lake Mutanda nearby (45 min drive, exceptional scenery), Nkuringo Community Tourism activities, proximity to Mgahinga for golden monkey trekking.
Best for: fit, active travellers who prioritise dramatic scenery, photographers who want the Virunga volcano backdrop, couples and honeymooners (most romantic sector setting), and travellers combining with Lake Mutanda. Not ideal for: senior travellers, those with limited fitness, travellers who want accommodation choice, or anyone who needs a predictable and moderate trek duration.
