Gorilla permits for Uganda’s peak season sell out months in advance — but last-minute permits do become available, and there are reliable strategies for securing one. Whether you are planning a spontaneous trip or a permit fell through at the last moment, here are the best ways to get a gorilla permit in Uganda at short notice.
1. Check the UWA Online Booking System Regularly
Uganda Wildlife Authority’s online permit booking platform at ugandawildlife.org updates availability in real time. Cancellations, permit releases and last-minute openings all appear here first. Check daily — morning is the best time as new releases tend to appear early in the Uganda business day. Permits for the Rushaga sector (which has the most habituated families) are most likely to have last-minute availability due to the higher overall supply.
2. Contact Licensed Operators With Permit Inventory
Reputable Uganda tour operators pre-purchase permit blocks for peak season, and they occasionally have single permits available when group bookings cancel or participants drop out. Contact three to five licensed operators directly — by phone if possible, not just email — explaining your dates and flexibility. Operators are more likely to find you a permit if you can be flexible on sector and family. 3. Try Shoulder Season Dates for Immediate Availability

The gorilla encounter quality is the same year-round; the primary difference is trail conditions and, in May and September, slightly higher rainfall probability.
4. Ask About Same-Day or Next-Day Permits at the Sector Gate
A small allocation of permits is sometimes held for same-day or next-day purchase directly at the sector headquarters — particularly at Rushaga and Buhoma. This is not guaranteed and is less reliable than the strategies above, but visitors who arrive in Bwindi without a permit and present themselves at the sector office early in the morning occasionally secure a same-day slot. Come prepared with $800 in cash (USD) and arrive by 6:30am. The success rate varies by season and sector; peak July is near zero, shoulder May may be 30–40%.
5. Be Flexible on Sector and Family
The most important variable in securing a last-minute permit is flexibility. Visitors insisting on a specific family or sector have much lower success rates than those willing to accept any available slot. Surrender the preference for Buhoma if Rushaga has availability. Accept assignment to any family rather than requesting Mubare specifically.
