What Is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest?

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park covers 331 square kilometres of Afromontane forest in the Kigezi highlands of southwestern Uganda, at elevations ranging from 1,160 to 2,607 metres above sea level. The forest has been continuously vegetated for more than 25,000 years, surviving both the Ice Age and the subsequent arid period that stripped many East African forests. This ancient continuity means Bwindi has extraordinary biodiversity: over 350 bird species (including 23 Albertine Rift endemics), 120 mammal species, over 200 butterfly species, 163 tree species, and the most important mountain gorilla habitat in the world. UNESCO inscribed Bwindi as a World Heritage Site in 1994 specifically because of its exceptional biological diversity and its critical role in mountain gorilla conservation.

The Mountain Gorillas of Bwindi

Bwindi is home to approximately 459 mountain gorillas — more than half the global population of this critically endangered species. The Four Sectors of Bwindi Explained

Buhoma sector in the northwest is the original and most visited sector of Bwindi. It has three habituated gorilla families, the most established lodge infrastructure, and relatively accessible terrain compared to some other sectors. The Mubare family — the first habituated family in Bwindi, habituated in 1993 — treks from Buhoma. Ruhija sector in the northeast sits at the highest elevation of any Bwindi sector, with cooler temperatures and spectacular highland scenery. Two habituated families are found here and the sector sees fewer visitors than Buhoma. Rushaga sector in the south is the busiest sector by gorilla family count: six habituated families plus two semi-habituated families available through the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Rushaga is the most popular sector and permits book earliest here. Nkuringo sector in the southwest offers the most dramatic scenery — perched on a ridge above the Nkuringo valley — but also the most challenging terrain, particularly the steep descent into the forest. What the Gorilla Trekking Experience Is Like

Gorilla trekking at Bwindi begins with an early morning briefing at the sector’s visitor centre, typically at 8:00 AM. Groups of maximum eight visitors are assigned to a specific gorilla family and depart with armed rangers and trackers. Trek duration to reach the gorillas ranges from 30 minutes to four or more hours depending on where the family has moved since their last location the previous evening. Once the group reaches the gorilla family, one hour of close observation begins. The hour is spent watching the family — typically 10 to 20 individuals including a dominant silverback, females, juveniles, and infants — feeding, playing, grooming, and interacting. You will be within seven metres of these extraordinary animals. The emotional impact of the encounter is consistently described by travellers as one of the most profound experiences of their lives.

2027 Gorilla Permit Prices and Availability

The Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla trekking permit costs 800 USD per person for international visitors for 2027. This price has been stable in recent years and funds the conservation operations keeping Bwindi’s gorillas alive. Permits are issued for a specific date, sector, and gorilla family — they cannot be transferred between dates or sectors without UWA approval. Peak season permit availability (June to September and December) is limited and books out months in advance. The Rushaga sector, which has the most gorilla families and includes the GHE families, has the tightest availability in peak season. The Gorilla Habituation Experience (four hours, 1,500 USD) is limited to four visitors per day per GHE family group. Charter flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi airstrip to Kihihi (for Buhoma sector) or Kisoro (for Rushaga and Nkuringo) take approximately 45 minutes to one hour and are available through Aerolink Uganda and other operators.
