I Am Plus Size: Will Gorilla Trekking Work for Me?

Home / Travel News, Stories & Tips / Travel Logistics & FAQs / I Am Plus Size: Will Gorilla Trekking Work for Me?

If you are plus size and considering gorilla trekking Uganda, the question you probably have is not whether you can technically complete the trek — it is whether you will be comfortable, whether the logistics work, and whether you will have the same experience as everyone else. This post answers all of those questions directly and honestly.

The Trek Itself: What Physical Demands Does It Make?

Gorilla trekking is forest walking on uneven terrain for a total duration that varies from one to four hours or more. The key physical demands are cardiovascular endurance (sustained walking at a gentle to moderate pace), balance on uneven ground, and leg strength for occasional steep sections. Body size — in the plus-size sense — affects two main things: cardiovascular load on the uphills and comfort in the heat. Neither of these is a barrier that makes the trek impossible; both are factors that benefit from specific preparation and the right support decisions.

There is no weight limit for gorilla trekking at Bwindi. Uganda Wildlife Authority does not exclude trekkers based on body size. The experience is accessible to anyone who can complete the walking component with appropriate support.

The Porter Is Your Most Important Decision

Hire a porter. This is the single most impactful decision a plus-size trekker can make. A porter carries your day pack, reducing your total load and freeing your energy for the walking. On steep or slippery sections, a porter provides physical assistance and steadies you as needed. Experienced Bwindi porters are strong, skilled, completely non-judgmental, and entirely focused on helping you succeed. Do not let any sense of embarrassment stop you from hiring one — porters at Bwindi assist trekkers of every age, size, and fitness level, and this is normal and expected. The porter experience at Bwindi is universally described as positive regardless of why trekkers hire them.

Trekking Poles and Footwear

Trekking poles improve stability on uneven terrain and reduce knee load on descents — beneficial for all trekkers and particularly valuable for plus-size travellers where knee load is higher. Bring two poles, not one. Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support are essential — ankle rolls on wet forest floor are the most common minor injury on gorilla treks and proper footwear prevents them. Ensure your boots are broken in before arrival; new boots on the trek day guarantee blisters. Moisture-wicking socks reduce heat discomfort during extended walking.

Sector Selection: Ask for a Gentler Assignment

When booking, tell us about your physical situation — including if you have concerns about the terrain. We will specifically request a lower-difficulty sector and gorilla family assignment from Uganda Wildlife Authority. Buhoma sector typically offers some of the more accessible terrain in Bwindi. Some gorilla families are reliably found in gentler areas; others range into steep highland terrain more frequently. The right sector assignment is a meaningful factor in the difficulty of your specific trek day. UWA rangers do their best to match ability to assignment when the information is provided in advance.

Clothing and Heat Management

Bwindi is a rainforest at elevation — temperatures are typically 15 to 22 degrees Celsius, which is mild by East African standards. Humidity can be high, making physical exertion feel warmer than the air temperature suggests. Wear moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics rather than cotton. Light-coloured long sleeves and trousers are required for gorilla trekking (for sun protection and to reduce skin exposure to forest vegetation and insects). Carry water — at least 1.5 litres — and drink consistently throughout the trek. Do not wait until you feel thirsty; hydration is the primary heat management tool available to you on the trek.

What to Tell Us When Booking

Be honest about your physical situation when you contact us. This is not about meeting a requirement — it is about building the right trip for you. With accurate information, we can assign the right sector, request a gentle-terrain family group, organise an experienced porter, and brief the ranger on your specific situation before trek day. The rangers at Bwindi are professionals who have guided trekkers of every description successfully. The more information we have in advance, the better the preparation, and the better your experience.
