Updated

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is roughly 430 to 520 km from Kampala by road, a drive of about 7 to 10 hours depending on which of the park’s four sectors your gorilla permit is for. The first two-thirds is fast tarmac; the last stretch climbs into the hills on narrower, slower roads. Here are the distances and times for each sector, the routes drivers actually use, and how to make the day easier.

Distance and drive time by sector

Bwindi has four trekking sectors, each with its own entrance, so “Kampala to Bwindi” really means Kampala to one of them. Your permit names the sector, and the sector decides the route. The figures below are typical for a private 4×4 with a driver-guide and include short stops; add an hour or more in heavy rain or if you stop for lunch and sightseeing.

From Kampala toApprox. distanceTypical driveUsual route
Buhoma (north)460-480 km8-9 hoursMasaka, Mbarara, Ntungamo, Rukungiri, Kihihi
Ruhija (east)430-450 km7-8 hoursMasaka, Mbarara, Ntungamo, Kabale
Rushaga (south)480-500 km8-9 hoursMasaka, Mbarara, Kabale, then west via Rubanda
Nkuringo (south-west)500-520 km9-10 hoursMasaka, Mbarara, Kabale, Kisoro

The main road west: Kampala to Mbarara

Every route starts on the Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara highway, about 270 km of mostly good tarmac. Expect slow traffic leaving Kampala, especially on weekday mornings, then a steady run past Mpigi and across the Equator at Kayabwe, where most drivers make a short stop. Masaka is the usual tea break and Mbarara, about four to five hours from Kampala, the natural lunch stop.

After Mbarara the routes divide. For Buhoma in the north, drivers usually head through Ntungamo and Rukungiri towards Kihihi and Butogota, with the final section on murram (gravel) road. For Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo the route continues south to Kabale, the gateway town for the southern sectors, before the climb on the road from Kabale into the park.

What slows the drive down

The tarmac is not the problem; the last 50 to 100 km are. Hill roads into Bwindi are steep, winding and in places unpaved, and rain makes them slippery, particularly in March to May and October to November. Speed bumps through every trading centre, traffic police checks and trucks on the climbs all add time. Driving after dark on these roads is best avoided, so most itineraries leave Kampala by 7 am to arrive before sunset.

Breaking the journey

Ten hours in a vehicle the day before a trek is tiring, and many travellers split the drive. Popular overnight stops are Lake Mburo National Park, just off the highway near Mbarara, where you can add a boat trip or game drive, and Lake Bunyonyi near Kabale for the southern sectors. Our guide to the best stopovers on the drive covers the Equator, Igongo Cultural Centre and other places to stretch your legs.

Faster and cheaper alternatives

If time matters more than budget, scheduled and charter flights from Entebbe or Kajjansi reach Kihihi (for Buhoma) or Kisoro (for the southern sectors) in about one to two hours; see our guide to flying to Bwindi. On a tight budget, the bus and coach option reaches Kabale or Butogota for a fraction of the cost but is slower and needs a local transfer at the end. Arriving at the airport rather than in the capital? Read Entebbe to Bwindi. Experienced drivers can also hire a 4×4; our self-drive guide explains what to expect.
