Rushaga sector is Bwindi’s most popular gorilla trekking destination by sheer number of available families, and for good reason. With six fully habituated gorilla families and two semi-habituated families for the Gorilla Habituation Experience, Rushaga offers more permit availability and more booking flexibility than any other Bwindi sector. Where Is Rushaga Sector?
Rushaga sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, accessed from the town of Kabale via Rubuguri (approximately 80 kilometres from Kabale by road, taking 1.5 to 2 hours). The sector’s headquarters at Rushaga are well-equipped with a visitor centre, briefing area, and facilities for trekking groups. The landscape in Rushaga ranges from relatively open valley terrain to dense forest hillsides. The altitude of the trekking area is generally between 1,700 and 2,200 metres above sea level. Rushaga is more accessible from Kigali than Buhoma — the Rwanda border crossing at Katuna is approximately two hours from Rushaga, making it particularly convenient for travellers arriving from or departing to Rwanda.
The Rushaga Gorilla Families
Rushaga currently hosts six fully habituated gorilla families available for standard trekking permits: Nshongi (the largest group in Bwindi, with approximately 25 members), Mishaya (a group that split from Nshongi, led by a lone silverback), Busingye (a relatively small family that split from Nshongi), Kahungye (a medium-sized family), Bweza (a smaller family), and Rwigi. Each family has its own territory and ranging pattern within the sector. Permit assignments at Rushaga are made by the Uganda Wildlife Authority based on group fitness levels and permit availability. If you have a preference for a specific family (e.g., Nshongi for the largest group experience), let us know when booking and we will communicate this preference to UWA, though assignment ultimately depends on availability and trek suitability.
The Gorilla Habituation Experience at Rushaga
Rushaga is the only sector in Bwindi offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHE). Two semi-habituated gorilla families — Bikyingi and Bahati — are currently in the habituation process. The GHE allows four visitors per family per day (maximum eight GHE permits per day across both families) to join the UWA research team for a four-hour encounter. The permit cost is 1,500 USD per person — 700 USD more than the standard permit. The four-hour format allows extended observation of gorilla behaviour that the standard one-hour trek cannot accommodate. For travellers with a deep interest in gorilla behaviour, primate research, or wildlife photography requiring extended time, the GHE is the most immersive gorilla experience available in East Africa. GHE permits require the same advance booking as standard permits — often more so, given the limited daily availability.
Trek Difficulty at Rushaga
Rushaga’s terrain is varied. Some family groups range in relatively accessible areas near the forest edge with moderate slopes. Others move into steeper, denser forest interior. Trek difficulty at Rushaga is considered moderate on average, with some individual days being easier and others harder. It is not the easiest Bwindi sector (that distinction belongs to some Buhoma treks) nor the hardest (Nkuringo is generally more challenging). The variability means that Rushaga works for a wide range of fitness levels, particularly with porters, but also means that trek difficulty on any specific day cannot be fully predicted in advance. Hiring a porter is recommended for all Rushaga visitors over 50 or with any fitness concerns.
Accommodation Options Near Rushaga
Rushaga has good accommodation options at multiple price points. Gorilla Valley Lodge is a consistently well-reviewed mid-range option popular with travellers seeking good value and reliable service. Bwindi Backpackers (budget) and several community guesthouses offer basic but clean accommodation for budget travellers. At the higher end, some lodges offer exclusive cottages with forest views. Food at mid-range and up lodges near Rushaga is generally excellent — the combination of local Ugandan produce and internationally trained lodge chefs produces menus that regularly surprise visitors. Confirm meal options for dietary requirements when booking — vegetarian and vegan needs are accommodated with advance notice.
When to Book Rushaga Permits for 2027
Rushaga is the most popular sector and fills earliest in peak season. For June to September 2027 and December 2027, we recommend confirming permit availability no later than March 2027 — and ideally earlier. For shoulder season dates (April-May, October-November), availability is better and a two-month advance booking is generally sufficient. For the Gorilla Habituation Experience, add one to two months of lead time on top of standard permit booking timelines due to the very limited daily permit numbers. Rushaga vs. Other Bwindi Sectors: Which Is Right for You?
Choose Rushaga if: you want maximum gorilla family choice; you want the Gorilla Habituation Experience; you are arriving from Rwanda and want the shortest ground journey; or you need the flexibility of multiple available families to increase the probability of a good permit assignment. Consider Buhoma if: you want the most established tourist infrastructure; you are arriving from Kampala and prefer the northern road; or you want a sector with a long history and the original Bwindi gorilla families. Consider Nkuringo if: dramatic scenery is a priority; you are fit and want the most adventurous terrain; or you are connecting to DRC or Rwanda via the southwestern border. Ruhija is best for: high-altitude enthusiasts; those wanting the least-visited sector experience; and birdwatchers (Ruhija’s altitude produces distinctive highland bird species).
