Ruhija’s Setting and Character
Ruhija sector is located in the northeastern corner of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, at elevations of 2,000 to 2,600 metres above sea level — significantly higher than Buhoma or Rushaga. The higher altitude means cooler temperatures (night temperatures at Ruhija can drop to 10 degrees Celsius or below even in dry season) and more mist, particularly in the mornings. The forest at this elevation is different in character from lower Bwindi — more open in places, with giant tree heathers and Afromontane vegetation species replacing some of the lower-altitude dense forest. The light at Ruhija is extraordinary: misty mornings clearing to clear highland skies, with views across the forest canopy toward the Virunga volcanoes on clear days.
Ruhija’s Gorilla Families
Ruhija sector has two habituated gorilla families: Bitukura and Oruzogo. The Bitukura family is one of the larger groups in Bwindi, with approximately 14 individuals including multiple silverbacks — a multi-male group, which is rarer in mountain gorilla societies and creates more complex and interesting family dynamics to observe. Oruzogo has around 20 members. Both families range primarily in the higher-altitude sections of the Ruhija area. The African green broadbill, Grauer’s swamp warbler, Shelley’s crimsonwing, the strange weaver, and the handsome francolin are among the target species that draw serious birdwatchers to Ruhija specifically. The altitude effect is particularly noticeable for visitors coming directly from sea-level destinations without acclimatisation time. Accommodation at Ruhija

For luxury travellers, accommodation is limited and some visitors prefer to stay at lodges in the Kabale or Kisoro areas and drive to Ruhija for the trek (approximately 90 minutes from Kabale). The limited accommodation is part of why Ruhija attracts a different profile of visitor — typically more independent, more experienced Africa travellers and serious wildlife enthusiasts rather than first-time gorilla trekkers seeking comfort.
Getting to Ruhija
Ruhija is accessed from Kabale town (approximately 65 kilometres by road, taking 90 minutes to two hours on a moderately good road). From Kampala, the total journey is approximately eight to nine hours via Kabale. There is no charter airstrip specifically serving Ruhija — the nearest options are Kisoro (approximately two hours by road) or Kihihi (approximately three hours). For most Ruhija visitors, road transport from Kampala via Kabale is the practical approach, with Kabale offering good overnight accommodation before the final drive to Ruhija.
