Nkuringo sector is Bwindi’s most dramatic and most physically demanding gorilla trekking destination. Perched on a ridge above a deep valley on the southwestern edge of Bwindi, with views across into the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Virunga volcanoes, Nkuringo offers a gorilla trekking experience unlike any other in Uganda. But it is not for everyone. Here is everything you need to decide whether Nkuringo is right for your 2027 trek.
Nkuringo’s Dramatic Setting
Nkuringo sector sits on the southwestern edge of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, at elevations between 2,000 and 2,400 metres above sea level. The sector takes its name from the Nkuringo hill — a prominent ridge from which the forest drops steeply into a deep valley before rising again into the heart of Bwindi. The setting is visually exceptional: on clear mornings, you can see the Virunga volcanoes on the DRC border, Lake Mutanda, and the patchwork of cultivated hillsides surrounding the park. The lodge accommodation at Nkuringo — particularly Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge and Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp — is among the most spectacularly situated wildlife accommodation in Africa.
Nkuringo’s Gorilla Families
Nkuringo sector has two habituated gorilla families: the Nkuringo family and the Christmas family. The Nkuringo family is one of Bwindi’s best-known groups, led by a dominant silverback named Rafiki before his tragic death in 2020 (poached, a painful reminder of why conservation funding matters). The family has continued under new silverback leadership and remains habituated and fully accessible for trekking. The Christmas family is smaller and ranges within the Nkuringo sector. Both families can be found in terrain that varies from moderately challenging to very steep depending on their daily movements. The Nkuringo families are known for ranging into some of the most dramatic and visually spectacular forest terrain in all of Bwindi.
The Nkuringo Descent: What Makes It Challenging
The defining challenge of Nkuringo trekking is the descent from the ridge into the forest and the subsequent return climb. The main trail drops steeply from Nkuringo hill into the forest below — a descent of several hundred metres on a trail that can be muddy and slippery after rain. The climb back out at the end of the trek, on tired legs after the forest walk and gorilla hour, is Nkuringo’s signature physical challenge. Fit, experienced trekkers typically find it hard but exhilarating. Travellers who underestimate it, or who trek without poles and a porter, sometimes find it genuinely difficult. This is not a trek to take lightly or without preparation.
Who Should Trek Nkuringo and Who Should Not
Nkuringo is right for: physically fit travellers who want the most dramatic trekking experience in Bwindi; those who prioritise spectacular scenery and a sense of adventure over ease; experienced trekkers and hikers; those staying at Clouds Mountain or Sanctuary for the lodge experience and wanting the local sector trek; and photography enthusiasts who want the dramatic backdrop of the Nkuringo escarpment. Nkuringo is not recommended for: older travellers or those with knee problems, cardiovascular conditions, or limited fitness; first-time gorilla trekkers who want a more predictable difficulty level; travellers who have not hiked on steep terrain before; or anyone who cannot commit to hiring a porter and bringing poles. For this sector specifically, the porter is genuinely essential rather than merely recommended.
Accommodation at Nkuringo
Nkuringo’s lodges are among the most celebrated in Uganda. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is perched on a ridge at 2,200 metres with stunning views across to the Virunga volcanoes and offers luxury accommodation with outstanding food and personalised service. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp (Nkuringo) offers a high-end tented camp experience with an intimate forest atmosphere. Both lodges cater primarily to high-end travellers who have specifically sought out Nkuringo for its combination of dramatic scenery and gorilla trekking. The experience of waking up above the clouds at Nkuringo on a clear morning is one of Uganda’s most extraordinary travel moments.
Getting to Nkuringo
Nkuringo is the farthest Bwindi sector from Kampala — approximately nine to ten hours by road via Kabale and Kisoro. Charter flights to Kisoro airstrip (approximately one hour from Nkuringo by road) significantly reduce journey time. The final road section from Kisoro to Nkuringo involves steep mountain tracks — a 4WD vehicle is essential and the final approach to some lodges is on unpaved roads that require an experienced driver. This remoteness is part of Nkuringo’s appeal but requires more logistical commitment than the more accessible sectors.

Bwindi has four gorilla trekking sectors: Buhoma (north — most established, best infrastructure), Ruhija (east — highest altitude, cooler), Rushaga (south — most gorilla families, home of the GHEX), and Nkuringo (southwest — most dramatic scenery, most challenging terrain).
Buhoma is generally recommended for first-timers: it has the widest range of lodge accommodation, the most established trekking infrastructure, and moderate terrain. Rushaga is best if you want the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Nkuringo offers the most dramatic views but the steepest descent. Ruhija is quieter and sits at the highest altitude.
You cannot choose a specific family, but you can specify a sector when booking your permit. UWA assigns you to a habituated family within your chosen sector each morning at the briefing. Rangers track the family’s overnight position before your group departs, so by the time you enter the forest, the family’s location is known.
Bwindi is approximately 480–530km from Kampala depending on the sector — roughly 8–9 hours by road. Charter flights from Entebbe to Kihihi Airstrip (for Buhoma/Ruhija) or Kisoro Airstrip (for Rushaga/Nkuringo/Mgahinga) take 50–60 minutes and cost $250–$350 per person on shared charters.
Bwindi currently has over 20 habituated gorilla families spread across its four sectors, making it the most gorilla-dense trekking destination in the world. Rushaga sector alone has more than 6 habituated families. New families are periodically added to the habituation programme as the gorilla population grows.
