Why the sector matters most
Gorilla permits are sold for one sector, and you must be at that sector’s headquarters for the 07:30 briefing. Buhoma and Rushaga are about four hours apart by road, and even neighbouring sectors can be an hour or more apart on winding dirt roads. A beautiful lodge in the wrong sector means a pre-dawn drive before a day that may already be long. So book your permit first, then choose a lodge close to that sector’s headquarters. What each budget gets you
Budget and community lodges, from about US$50–120 per person per night with meals, offer simple, clean rooms, hot water most of the time and home-style food, often run by or supporting local communities. Mid-range lodges, roughly US$150–350, add comfortable cottages, forest or valley views, more reliable power and better food.
Luxury lodges, from about US$500 to over US$1,500, offer spacious suites with fireplaces, fine dining, attentive service and often drinks, laundry and massages included. What to check before booking
Beyond price, a few details make a big difference. Ask how far the lodge is from your sector’s headquarters and whether the lodge drives you to the briefing. Many lodges sit on steep hillsides, so check how many steps lie between rooms and the dining area if mobility is a concern. When to book
The best lodges near Bwindi have few rooms. For June–September and the Christmas period, book four to six months ahead, and up to a year ahead for luxury lodges or larger groups. In the low season months of April, May and November, availability is easier and some lodges offer lower rates, alongside the US$600 permit.
