The gorillas may still be adjusting to human presence, which means their responses — including the occasional threat display or charge bluff — are more raw and more real.

The Scientific Access
GHEX groups are typically accompanied by researchers as well as rangers, and the extended contact time allows for more extended observation and discussion than the standard trek permits. Visitors who are genuinely interested in gorilla behaviour, ecology, and conservation science — rather than primarily in photography and the emotional impact of the encounter — often find the GHEX more intellectually rewarding than the standard trek.
What the GHEX Does Not Guarantee
The longer contact time does not guarantee more dramatic or photogenic encounters. A habituation family may spend much of the four hours foraging in dense undergrowth, with limited visibility and limited opportunity for the close-range, clear-sighting encounters that standard trekking’s more predictable gorilla behaviour often provides. The unpredictability is real in both directions — you may have a more extraordinary encounter, or you may have a more frustrating one.
Physical demands are also greater. Following a habituation family for up to four hours through variable terrain is more demanding than a standard trek. The GHEX requires good physical fitness and genuine commitment — it is not a more comfortable version of gorilla trekking but a more demanding one.
