Rushaga: The Road to Southern Bwindi’s Gorilla Families 2027

The Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX) at Rushaga is fundamentally different from a standard gorilla trekking permit in both format and cost. What GHEX is: a 4-hour visit with a gorilla family that is still in the process of becoming fully habituated to humans; you spend significantly more time in the presence of the gorillas than on a standard 1-hour trek; you observe the research team and trackers working with the family. The cost: GHEX permits cost USD 1,500 per person (versus USD 800 for standard trekking); only 4 people per day are allowed on a GHEX; this limits availability and makes it a genuinely exclusive experience. The gorilla family: the family in the habituation process may be less predictable than fully habituated families; the trackers manage the interaction carefully; the experience is more raw and less managed than a standard trek. Standard trekking at Rushaga: the multiple fully habituated families at Rushaga give the sector strong permit availability for the standard USD 800 permit; the trekking experience with these families is comparable to Buhoma.

Rushaga is reached from Kisoro or Kabale on roads that pass through the dramatic southwestern Uganda highlands. From Kisoro to Rushaga: approximately 35km east-northeast of Kisoro; approximately 45-60 minutes by road; the road passes through communities on the southern edge of Bwindi; mostly murram but negotiable in a standard 4WD. From Kabale to Rushaga: approximately 70km; 1.5-2 hours; the route goes south from Kabale through highland terrain. From Buhoma to Rushaga: there is no direct road through Bwindi; the connection goes out to the road network and back in; the drive is approximately 150km and 4-5 hours; for visits to both sectors on the same trip, allow a full driving day between them. By charter flight: the nearest airstrips are Kisoro (90 minutes from Entebbe) and Kihihi (75 minutes from Entebbe); from Kisoro, Rushaga is approximately 1 hour by road.

Rushaga has more habituated gorilla families than any other Bwindi sector. Nshongi family: one of the largest gorilla groups in Bwindi; the Nshongi family has historically had a very large membership; split into multiple sub-groups over time as gorilla families sometimes do when they get very large. Kahungye family: another large Rushaga family; known for multi-silverback structure with several adult males in the group; interesting group dynamics for observation. Mishaya family: a family that split from a larger group; led by a powerful silverback; ranges in the Rushaga area. Busingye family: one of the more recently habituated groups; named after a prominent silverback. Note on family assignments: UWA assigns specific gorilla families to specific permits; you do not choose which family you trek to — the assignment is made by rangers based on family location and ranger availability; all habituated families provide an excellent encounter.

Rushaga has a growing accommodation offering reflecting its status as Bwindi’s most active sector. Gorilla Safari Lodge: one of the most established Rushaga lodges; overlooks the forest; cottages with forest views; good community and conservation credentials; mid-to-upper range. Rushaga Gorilla Camp: a comfortable option near the trailhead; en-suite tents and cottages; consistent service; convenient for the pre-trek briefing. Lake Mutanda Resort: not at the park gate but near Kisoro on the shore of Lake Mutanda; one of the most scenic accommodation options in the Kisoro/Rushaga area; a 45-minute drive to the Rushaga trailhead; the lake and Virunga volcano views are spectacular. Budget options: community guesthouses and simple lodges in the Rushaga village area serve budget trekkers; facilities are basic but the proximity to the trailhead means very short pre-trek preparation.

Rushaga and Buhoma are the two most visited Bwindi sectors and have different strengths. Choose Rushaga if: you are booking last-minute or need higher permit availability; you want the gorilla habituation experience (GHEX); you are arriving from Kisoro or Rwanda (Rushaga is closer from that direction); you want the option of combining with Lake Mutanda scenic accommodation. Choose Buhoma if: you want the most established and longest-running gorilla trekking sector in Bwindi; you are arriving from Kihihi airstrip; you want the specific Buhoma community tourism experience which is the oldest in Uganda. Trekking quality: similar quality in both sectors; the gorilla encounter itself is governed by the same 1-hour rule for standard permits; the gorillas at both sectors are fully habituated and comfortable with human presence. The honest verdict: Rushaga is increasingly the most practical choice due to availability; Buhoma has more historical prestige and surrounding community tourism options.
