Nkuringo is Bwindi Impenetrable Forest’s highest and most dramatic sector, perched at over 2,200 meters above sea level on the southern rim of the park. The views from Nkuringo — across the volcanic landscape toward the Virunga peaks and the DRC — are some of the finest in Uganda. Where Nkuringo Is
Nkuringo sector sits in Bwindi’s southwestern corner, close to the Rwandan border and the Virunga volcanic chain. The sector headquarters is located high above the forest at an altitude that makes the air noticeably thinner and cooler than other parts of Bwindi. The gorilla families habituated in Nkuringo sector are tracked from this high-altitude entry point, meaning the trek itself often involves significant descents into the forest before finding the group. Nkuringo is a genuinely remote destination even by Bwindi standards.
The Route to Nkuringo
The most common approach is from Kisoro town, which is approximately 25 to 30 kilometers north of Nkuringo. The road from Kisoro toward Nteko and Nkuringo is unpaved from shortly after leaving Kisoro and climbs steeply through community land and forest edge to the Nkuringo ridge. The road is narrow, steep, and subject to serious deterioration after heavy rain. The alternative approach is from Kabale, driving through Rubuguli and ascending via a different track on the eastern side. Both approaches require a proper 4WD Land Cruiser — this is not a route for underpowered or low-clearance vehicles.
Road Conditions and Timing
The road to Nkuringo is the most challenging access road of any Bwindi sector in 2027. In dry season (June to August and December to January) it is rough but passable in a capable 4WD. In the rainy seasons (April to May and October to November) the steep sections can become impassable mud slides. Several lodges near Nkuringo have developed protocols for these conditions — alternative routes, tractor assistance, or short walking transfers with porters for luggage. If traveling in the wet season, contact your lodge or operator specifically about current road conditions before departing Kisoro.
Flying In: The Alternative Approach
For visitors who want to avoid the challenging road, Kisoro airstrip receives domestic flights from Entebbe and is the natural entry point for Nkuringo visitors arriving by air. From Kisoro airstrip a lodge vehicle collects you and takes the road to Nkuringo. Even from the airstrip the road is unpaved and climbing — but the distance is shorter and a good lodge vehicle handles it reliably. Flying in and road-transferring to the lodge is the standard approach for premium safari packages visiting Nkuringo.
Lodges Near Nkuringo
Nkuringo has some of Bwindi’s most atmospheric accommodation. Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge sits at the forest edge at altitude and has been one of the most respected lodges in the park for years. The restaurant and lounge have views across the forest canopy toward the volcanoes that make every meal a visual experience. Clouds sometimes drift through the lodge itself — a memorable if chilly effect. Several smaller and more affordable lodges also operate in the Nkuringo community area around the park boundary.
The Gorilla Trek From Nkuringo
Gorilla treks from Nkuringo are known for being physically demanding. The sectors high starting point means treks often involve steep descents into the forest and corresponding climbs back out. Gorilla families move and their location is never guaranteed, but the general pattern in Nkuringo involves working at lower elevations inside the park. Trekkers should be reasonably fit and prepared for several hours of walking on steep terrain. Porters are available at the UWA trailhead and are strongly recommended for Nkuringo treks — they carry bags and provide a steadying hand on steep sections.
Nkuringo in 2027 rewards the effort required to reach it. The altitude, the views, the physical challenge of the trek, and the sense of genuine remoteness combine to make it one of the most distinctive gorilla trekking experiences in Africa. Getting there is part of the point.
