Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is divided into four trekking sectors. They are in the same national park and they contain the same species — mountain gorillas — but beyond that the similarities end. The sectors differ in terrain, altitude, the number of families available, lodge infrastructure, accessibility from Entebbe and Kigali, and the character of the trek itself. Choosing your sector is the most important logistical decision you make before booking a gorilla permit, and it is a decision worth making with real information rather than defaults.
Buhoma Sector — Northern Bwindi
Location and access
Buhoma is in the northern part of Bwindi and is the most accessible sector from Kampala and Entebbe — approximately eight to nine hours by road via Mbarara and Kabale. It is also the original trekking sector: the first gorilla family in Bwindi was habituated here in 1991, and the infrastructure of lodges, guides, and park headquarters that developed around Buhoma over the following three decades makes it the most developed sector. If you are arriving without a specific preference, Buhoma is where first-time visitors are most often directed.
Gorilla families
Three habituated families trek from Buhoma: Mubare (the oldest family in Bwindi, first habituated 1991, currently led by silverback Kanyonyi, approximately 10 members), Habinyanja (habituated 1997, multi-male group, approximately 17 members), and Rushegura (split from Habinyanja in 2002, approximately 18 members, consistently described by guides as the most relaxed and visitor-composed family in the sector).
Terrain and trek difficulty
Moderate. The forest around Buhoma is dense but the terrain is less steep than Nkuringo and the altitude is lower than Ruhija. Trek times to reach the families range from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on overnight movements. This sector is appropriate for visitors of average fitness without specific preparation.
Accommodation
The widest range of accommodation of any Bwindi sector — from the luxury of Bwindi Lodge and Gorilla Forest Camp through mid-range Gorilla Safari Lodge and Buhoma Community Rest Camp to basic options for budget visitors. The lodge infrastructure around Buhoma has developed over thirty years and the options at every price point are more numerous than in other sectors.
Who should choose Buhoma
First-time visitors who want the most established infrastructure. Visitors combining Bwindi with the Kibale chimpanzee circuit from the north. Groups with mixed fitness levels. Visitors on shorter itineraries (3–4 days) who want the most reliable and logistically straightforward sector.
Ruhija Sector — Eastern Bwindi
Location and access
Ruhija is in the eastern part of Bwindi and sits at the highest altitude of any sector — between 2,200 and 2,600 metres above sea level. The road to Ruhija branches off the main Kabale–Buhoma route, and the final approach is steep. The sector is significantly less visited than Buhoma and Rushaga, which means fewer vehicles at the gate and more quiet in the forest on trek days.
Gorilla families
Three families are based in Ruhija: Oruzogo (approximately 23 members, multi-silverback group, one of the larger families in the eastern sector), Bitukura (approximately 14 members, single dominant silverback, stable family structure), and Kyaguliro (research group primarily managed for scientific study by the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Research Trust — tourism permits occasionally available but not guaranteed; confirm at booking).
Terrain and trek difficulty
Moderate to challenging. The high altitude means the forest character is different from lower sectors — cooler, with different vegetation and bird species. The terrain is hilly but not as steep as Nkuringo. The altitude affects exertion for visitors who are not acclimatised — allow an extra day in Uganda before the trek if possible.
Accommodation
Limited compared to Buhoma — fewer lodges, less development. Ruhija Gorilla Friends Community Camp and a small number of other properties serve this sector. Visitors seeking luxury should check lodge availability carefully before choosing Ruhija.
Who should choose Ruhija
Birders — Ruhija holds the highest density of Albertine Rift endemic bird species of any sector in Bwindi and is the primary destination for serious birding itineraries that include gorilla trekking. Visitors who want fewer people at the gate. Visitors combining Bwindi with eastern Uganda or Kigali via the eastern route. Research-minded visitors interested in the Kyaguliro study group.
Rushaga Sector — Southern Bwindi
Location and access
Rushaga is in the southern part of Bwindi and is the largest sector in terms of habituated gorilla families — eight families are currently based here. The road from Kabale to Rushaga is approximately 35 kilometres and takes about an hour. From Kigali, Rushaga is actually closer than Buhoma — approximately four and a half to five hours via the Katuna border crossing — which makes it the primary choice for visitors arriving from Rwanda.
Gorilla families
Eight habituated families: Nshongi (historically the largest family in Bwindi, now smaller after multiple splits), Mishaya (split from Nshongi in 2011, led by the assertive silverback Mishaya, approximately 12–15 members), Kahungye (approximately 17 members, accessible location), Bweza (approximately 8 members, small intimate group), Busingye (named for its calm silverback, approximately 10–12 members, one of the families used for gorilla habituation experience), Christmas (small, newer habituation), Bikingi (larger family, wide ranging), and Rwigi (recently habituated).
Rushaga also hosts the gorilla habituation experience — the four-to-six hour semi-wild gorilla encounter ($1,500 permit, maximum 4 visitors). This is only available in this sector.
Terrain and trek difficulty
Moderate. The southern forest terrain is hilly but not extreme. Trek times vary considerably across the eight families — some are reliably close to the gate and regularly produce 1–2 hour treks; others range further and can require 3–4 hours on active days. The variety of families means UWA rangers can match group fitness to an appropriate assignment on most days.
Accommodation
Good range of options including Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (luxury, ridge position), Mahogany Springs (luxury, riverside), Rushaga Gorilla Haven Lodge (mid-range, close to gate), Gorilla Mist Camp (mid-range). The sector’s proximity to Kigali has driven lodge development in recent years.
Who should choose Rushaga
Visitors arriving from Kigali — Rushaga is significantly closer than Buhoma from Rwanda. Visitors who want the gorilla habituation experience ($1,500 permit). Groups who need maximum permit availability — eight families means more permits and more scheduling flexibility. Visitors wanting the widest choice of gorilla family character. Anyone doing the 2-day or 3-day express safari from Kigali.
Nkuringo Sector — Southwestern Bwindi
Location and access
Nkuringo sits on a dramatic ridge in the southwestern corner of Bwindi, with views across into DRC and down into the Virunga foothills. It is the most remote sector in terms of road access — the approach from Kabale goes via Kisoro town, and the final road to the Nkuringo gate is steep and requires a vehicle with good clearance. From the gate, the trek descends into the forest valley and climbs back out on return — this is the element that makes Nkuringo the most physically demanding sector.
Gorilla families
One habituated family: the Nkuringo family, led by silverback Safari (approximately 15–18 members). Safari is known among sector guides as one of the most engaged silverbacks in Bwindi — he positions himself with direct attention toward visitor groups more deliberately than most other silverbacks, making the encounter in Nkuringo feel particularly intense and personal.
Terrain and trek difficulty
Challenging. The descent into the forest from the ridge-top gate and the return climb are the hardest single elements of any Bwindi trek. Visitors must be physically prepared — good cardiovascular fitness, appropriate footwear, and hiking poles are strongly recommended. The difficulty is real but it is also what gives Nkuringo its particular character: the landscape, the views, and the effort required to reach the family all contribute to an encounter that feels harder-won and less easily compared to a hotel stay than the more accessible sectors.
Accommodation
Nkuringo Safari Camp and Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge are the main properties — both perched on the ridge with the views that give the sector its distinctive visual character. Limited options compared to Buhoma and Rushaga; book early as the smaller lodge inventory fills quickly.
Who should choose Nkuringo
Physically fit visitors who want the most dramatic landscape setting in Bwindi. Visitors who want a single-family sector where there is only one possible assignment and no ambiguity about which gorillas you will see. Visitors combining Bwindi with Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — Nkuringo is closest to Mgahinga and the two can be combined in a logical southwestern Uganda circuit.

How Permits Are Assigned Within a Sector
You book a permit for a sector — not for a specific family. Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger teams track every habituated family’s overnight position and movement pattern each morning, and visitor groups are assigned to families at the gate briefing based on location, group size, and the fitness assessment your guide provides to the ranger coordinator. In Rushaga, with eight families available, a group of slower walkers may be assigned to a family that is closer to the gate; a fit group may be sent to a family that moved further overnight. In Nkuringo, there is only one family — if they are confirmed in the sector, that is your assignment.
