Arrival day at Buhoma is typically a rest and orientation day before the early morning gorilla trek. Check-in at your lodge: lodges at Buhoma are typically 1-3km from the UWA gate; most lodges include meals as part of the package; check-in and a short orientation from the lodge manager covers meal times, porter hire, wake-up call time, and what to bring for the trek. The gorilla briefing: if your trek is the following morning, you may receive an informal pre-briefing from your lodge; the official UWA briefing happens the morning of the trek at the UWA headquarters; you do not need to attend any briefing on arrival day. Altitude acclimatisation: Buhoma is at approximately 1,600 metres; most visitors from lower elevations feel normal at this altitude; some light-headedness is possible on the first day; drink water and take it easy. Explore the village: Buhoma village has a small community market, craft stalls, and the Buhoma Community Rest Camp reception area; walking the village before dark gives a sense of the community around the park.

The Buhoma sector of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has several habituated gorilla families that have been in contact with humans since the habituation programme began in the 1990s. Mubare family: one of the oldest habituated families in Bwindi; the first family habituated in Uganda; relatively small family as of recent census; classic Bwindi forest territory. Habinyanja family: one of the larger families in Buhoma; split from the Rushegura family in 2002; regular trekking group. Rushegura family: a more recently habituated group; occupies territory closer to Buhoma village and sometimes ranges to the forest edge; shorter treks on some days when close to the gate. Permit assignment: when you hold a permit for Buhoma sector, UWA assigns you to one of the available families on the morning of the trek; you do not typically choose which family you visit; assignment is based on group allocation and family location; all families offer an exceptional experience. The briefing assignment: at the 7:30am briefing, your ranger guide introduces themselves and tells you which family you will visit; the group then sets off together.

Buhoma is a small community and its services are limited compared to even a small Uganda town. Accommodation range: from Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp (luxury, on the park boundary) to Buhoma Community Rest Camp (budget community-run); Mahogany Springs, Gorilla Safari Lodge, Bwindi View Bandas, and several mid-range and budget options. The community crafts market: a small outdoor market near the UWA gate sells locally made crafts — carved wooden gorillas, Batwa baskets, barkcloth items, and beads; prices are negotiable but fair dealing supports community income; the best time to browse is after your trek. Food and drinks: beyond lodge restaurants, there are several basic canteens in Buhoma village serving local food; cold drinks including sodas and water are available at the village shops. Phone signal and power: MTN Uganda has limited signal in parts of Buhoma; data speeds are slow; lodges have Wi-Fi of varying quality; power supply is unreliable — charge all batteries the night before your trek; bring a USB power bank as backup. Medical facilities: no hospital in Buhoma; the nearest significant medical facility is in Kabale (50km, 1.5-2 hours); bring a full personal first aid kit and any medications you require.

A two-night stay at Buhoma allows time for activities beyond the gorilla trek itself that enrich the overall Bwindi experience. Forest walk: guided walks inside Bwindi on the trail system near Buhoma; accompanied by a UWA ranger; excellent for birds (Bwindi has over 350 bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics; African green broadbill, short-tailed warbler, Grauer’s rush warbler are Bwindi specials); also good for small primates including red-tailed and black-and-white colobus monkeys. Village walk: guided community walk through Buhoma village and adjacent farmland; visits to local homes and farms; banana garden tour; traditional craft demonstrations; organised by the Buhoma Community Rest Camp or your lodge. Batwa trail experience: the Batwa Trail is a cultural programme where Batwa guides (former forest-dwelling people who lived in Bwindi before the national park was gazetted in 1991) demonstrate traditional forest skills, hunting techniques, and medicinal plant knowledge; booked through UWA; a powerful and emotionally resonant experience. Gorilla habituation experience: a half-day permit that allows a longer time with a gorilla family during the ongoing habituation process; different permit type to the standard one-hour trek; USD 1,500 per person as of 2027; available at Buhoma.

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has four entry sectors, each with distinct characteristics that suit different types of visitors. Buhoma (north): the most established sector; most lodge options at all price levels; most visitor traffic; good road access from Kihihi; habituated families include some of the oldest habituated gorillas in Uganda. Ruhija (east/northeast): higher altitude (approximately 2,300m); significantly cooler; fewer lodges; trekking reputation for more challenging terrain; excellent birding at altitude; the Bitukura family is a large and very rewarding family habitually found here. Rushaga (south): the largest number of habituated families in Bwindi; more accessible from Kisoro and Rwanda; growing lodge infrastructure; good for groups where multiple permits are needed. Nkuringo (southwest): the most dramatic hillside setting; Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge is here; the trek starts with a steep descent and returns uphill; small number of habituated families; the most remote sector in experience if not in fact.
