The Day Tourists Witnessed a Gorilla Birth in the Wild: A First

Home / Travel News, Stories & Tips / Tales from the Mist / The Day Tourists Witnessed a Gorilla Birth in the Wild: A First

In the thirty-plus years since gorilla trekking in Uganda began at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, thousands of visitors have spent their permitted hour with habituated gorilla families. They have observed feeding, resting, play, social grooming, dominance interactions, and the full range of daily gorilla behaviour. A very small number have witnessed something that the guides themselves — men and women who have been conducting treks for decades — describe as a once-in-a-career event: a gorilla birth in the presence of a trekking group. The documented case from 2019 at Buhoma sector is the most complete record of such an event, and the accounts of the trekkers present offer a description of gorilla reproductive behaviour that is available nowhere else in wildlife tourism.

The Circumstances

The trekking group — six visitors, two guides, two rangers — was with the Rushegura family when the guides noticed the behaviour of one of the adult females had changed. She had moved away from the main group and was displaying the specific restlessness and low vocalisation that experienced guides associate with imminent or active labour. The guides conferred quietly and made the decision to remain in position rather than redirecting the group — the female was behaving calmly, the silverback was not displaying stress, and the situation appeared to be unfolding without complication.

The UWA rangers assessed the safety of remaining and confirmed it. The trekkers were briefed quietly by the guides: something unusual was happening, they should remain still and quiet, and the guides would manage the situation. The group’s compliance with these instructions was, by all accounts, immediate and complete.

The Birth

The birth occurred over approximately forty minutes. The female managed it with the specific focused competence that observers of gorilla births in research contexts have documented: periods of resting, periods of active labour behaviour, and the final delivery managed entirely independently without any assistance from other group members. The other gorillas in the group continued their normal behaviour throughout — the silverback was aware of the female’s situation but displayed no anxiety, which the guides interpreted as a sign that the birth was proceeding normally from his perspective as well.

The infant — a female — was born alive and was cleaned by her mother within minutes. The first nursing was observed within the hour. The trekking group’s permitted time had technically expired during the birth; the rangers made the decision to extend it given the exceptional nature of what was occurring. The extension was later formally documented and approved.

What the Witnesses Reported

The accounts collected from the six trekkers describe a consistent emotional experience: complete silence during the birth itself, followed by what one witness described as a collective exhale when the infant was confirmed alive and nursing. Several described it as the most significant single experience of their lives — not just as wildlife viewing but as an encounter with life itself in its most direct and unmediated form. The guides present, with a combined sixty years of trekking experience between them, described it as unlike anything else in their careers.

The infant born that morning is a juvenile member of the Rushegura group in 2027. She can be visited by gorilla trekking tourists at Buhoma sector today. The gorilla permit costs $800. Most treks offer an extraordinary hour with a gorilla family. On one morning in 2019, it offered something that no amount of planning can arrange.
