Gorilla trekking Uganda is not a young person’s adventure. Some of the most meaningful gorilla trekking experiences we have organised have been for travellers in their 60s, 70s, and beyond — people with the patience to observe, the life experience to contextualise, and the wisdom to be fully present in an extraordinary moment. The senior gorilla trekking package is designed specifically around the requirements of over-60 travellers. Here is what it includes in 2027.
What the Senior Package Prioritises
The senior gorilla trekking package prioritises four things: sector assignment, porter service, comfortable accommodation, and pacing. Sector assignment: we specifically request Buhoma sector and one of the families known to range in gentler terrain — the Mubare or Rushegura family groups. This is coordinated with UWA on your behalf and communicated at the time of permit purchase. Porter service: two porters per senior trekker are arranged as standard in the senior package — one to carry the day pack and one to provide physical assistance on difficult sections. This double-porter approach provides the maximum support available for the trek. Comfortable accommodation: senior packages use mid-range to high-end accommodation with excellent beds, ensuite facilities, good hot water, and food prepared to dietary specifications. Pacing: the senior package itinerary builds extra buffer time into every transfer day, reducing the distances driven per day and ensuring arrival at each destination well before late afternoon.
Medical Preparation for Senior Gorilla Trekkers
Before booking a senior gorilla trekking package, we ask all over-60 travellers to complete a health information form disclosing relevant medical conditions, current medications, and their GP’s assessment of fitness for moderate hiking. This information helps us assign the right sector, coordinate with the ranger team, and ensure emergency contacts and protocols are in place. We also provide a detailed Uganda pre-travel health checklist — vaccinations required (yellow fever mandatory), anti-malarial prophylaxis options, altitude considerations (Bwindi is at 1,600 to 2,400 metres above sea level), and what to pack in your medical kit. A doctor’s clearance for moderate activity hiking is strongly recommended for travellers over 65 with any cardiovascular history.
Suggested Senior Package Itinerary (6 Days)
Day 1: Arrive Entebbe. Short drive to comfortable Entebbe hotel. Rest and orientation. Day 2: Charter flight to Kihihi (Buhoma sector). 40-minute transfer to lodge. Afternoon rest and lodge orientation. Day 3: Gorilla trek briefing at 8:00 AM. Trek with two dedicated porters to Mubare or Rushegura family. One hour with the gorilla family. Rest afternoon. Day 4: Forest walk (optional, gentle — the Buhoma community walk is flat and cultural), or full rest day. Brief for any additional activities. Day 5: Charter flight back to Entebbe. Afternoon in Entebbe — botanical gardens or waterfront. Day 6: Departure. This six-day structure is comfortable without being rushed, provides a full buffer on either side of the trek, and leaves room for adjustment if the trekker needs additional rest after the physical exertion of the trek day.

Frequently Asked Questions
Essential: long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, sturdy ankle-high waterproof hiking boots, light waterproof jacket, gardening gloves (to grip vegetation on steep terrain), hat. Recommended: gaiters (for wet season), dry-wicking underlayer, neck gaiter. Neutral or dark colours are preferred — avoid bright colours. No fragrance products.
Pack light — you will climb steep forest terrain. Essentials: 1.5–2 litres of water, snacks (energy bars, fruit), rain jacket, camera and spare batteries, insect repellent, sunscreen, small first aid kit, any personal medication. Your main luggage stays at the lodge. If you hire a porter (recommended), they carry your daypack for you.
Not required. UWA rangers provide free wooden walking sticks at the sector briefing point. For Nkuringo sector — which involves a very steep descent — good ankle support from your boots is more important than poles. For Ruhija (high altitude) and any wet season trek, a stick adds stability on muddy trails.
A versatile zoom in the 24–200mm range covers most forest situations. A fast lens (f/2.8 or wider) is valuable in the low forest light. Flash is strictly prohibited. Shoot in RAW. Set Auto ISO (max 6400), shutter priority at minimum 1/250s to freeze movement. Bring a dry bag or rain cover for your camera — rain is possible year-round.
Uganda is home to the mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei), one of two subspecies of eastern gorilla. They live exclusively in the Virunga volcanic highlands (Uganda/Rwanda/DRC) and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Uganda only). Mountain gorillas are the only gorilla subspecies that cannot survive in captivity — every individual you can trek is a wild animal.
