The Geographical Challenge
The Big Three circuit requires more travel than a southwest-Uganda-only trip. Bwindi and Kibale are in western Uganda. Murchison Falls is in the northwest, approximately 4.5 hours north of Kampala. Combining all three in a logical loop requires either a 10 to 12 day trip or judicious use of domestic charter flights. The most efficient routing: Entebbe — Bwindi (charter or road) — Kibale (road) — Murchison Falls (road via Fort Portal and Masindi, approximately 4 to 5 hours from Kibale) — Entebbe (road, approximately 4 hours from Murchison park gate). This counterclockwise loop minimises backtracking and covers all three parks in a single flowing itinerary.
Murchison Falls: What to Expect
Murchison Falls National Park covers 3,840 square kilometres of savanna, woodland, and Nile riverbank habitat. The park is divided by the Nile into a northern section (the main game area, where most game drives occur) and the southern Budongo Forest (chimpanzee habitat). The top-of-the-falls viewpoint is one of Uganda’s most dramatic non-wildlife experiences — standing at the lip of the seven-metre gap as the entire upper Nile crashes through is simultaneously terrifying and awe-inspiring. The Nile delta boat cruise from Paraa to the base of the falls provides extraordinary wildlife viewing: the banks are lined with hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, and the trees above filled with marabou storks and African fish eagles. Rothschild giraffe — one of only three wild populations remaining — are commonly seen on the northern bank game drives.
