Uganda’s Greatest Wildlife Circuit

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe
Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to lakeside hotel in Entebbe town. The evening can include dinner at a restaurant overlooking Lake Victoria — one of the world’s great lakes, visible from Entebbe’s shore. For arrivals with the evening free, the Entebbe Botanical Garden (where Tarzan films have been shot and where Uganda’s botanical research history began) provides a short walk in a beautiful lakeside setting.
Day 2: Entebbe to Kibale Forest
Depart Entebbe early for the 5 to 6 hour drive to Kibale Forest National Park via Fort Portal. The drive passes through the central Ugandan savannah before climbing to the scenic western highlands and the dramatic Fort Portal crater lake area. Arrive at Kibale in the afternoon with time for the Bigodi Wetland walk — a community-managed wetland bird sanctuary adjacent to the park that provides an excellent introduction to Uganda’s wetland species and community conservation model. Day 3: Chimpanzee Trekking at Kibale

One hour with the chimpanzees in Kibale’s magnificent forest. Afternoon primate diversity walk for additional primate species (red colobus, L’Hoest’s monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey) or relaxation at the lodge. Day 4: Kibale to Queen Elizabeth
Morning departure from Kibale for the 3 to 4 hour drive south to Queen Elizabeth National Park via the Kasese route. En route, optional stop at the Rwenzori Mountains viewpoint where the glaciated peaks of the Mountains of the Moon are visible on clear mornings. Arrive at Mweya Peninsula for afternoon game drive in the Kasenyi Plains area — the classic Uganda kob, buffalo, warthog, and elephant area of the park’s north. Afternoon Kazinga Channel boat cruise for hippos, crocodiles, and water birds. Overnight at Mweya Lodge or similar.
Day 5: Queen Elizabeth Wildlife
Full day in Queen Elizabeth. Morning game drive in the Kasenyi-Mweya area. Option of a morning Kyambura Gorge chimpanzee walk — a dramatically different chimpanzee encounter from Kibale, in the isolated forest gorge that cuts through the park’s northern savannah. Afternoon Ishasha drive (approximately 80 kilometres south) for the park’s famous tree-climbing lions — the lions of Ishasha who habitually rest in fig trees along the Ishasha River. Return to Mweya or overnight at Ishasha Wilderness Camp near the lion area. Overnight in Queen Elizabeth.
Day 6: Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi
Depart Queen Elizabeth for the 2.5 to 3 hour drive south to Bwindi via Ishasha (if overnighting at Mweya) or continue south from Ishasha (if overnighting in the Ishasha sector). The approach to Bwindi from the north passes through forest-fringe country and climbs to the highland zone that surrounds the park. Arrive at lodge in Buhoma or other sector in the afternoon. Evening at the forest edge — bird watching from lodge grounds, the forest soundscape at dusk. Overnight in Bwindi.
Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi
The climax of the safari. Gorilla trekking day at Bwindi. Report to sector headquarters by 7:30 am for briefing and family assignment. Trek into the forest. One hour with mountain gorillas. Return to lodge by early afternoon. Afternoon at leisure — rest, nature walk, community programme. Many visitors describe the afternoon of gorilla trek day as a period of quiet reflection in which the encounter gradually settles into understanding of what has just happened. Overnight in Bwindi.
Day 8: Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi
Optional second gorilla trek permit (highly recommended if budget allows) for a second gorilla encounter on day 8. Without a second permit, morning activities in Bwindi before departing for Lake Bunyonyi, approximately 2.5 hours from Buhoma via Kabale. Afternoon arrival at Lake Bunyonyi — the crater lake with 29 islands and terraced hillside backdrop that represents Uganda’s most serene scenic destination. Canoe on the lake, sunset from the shore, dinner at lakeside lodge. Overnight at Lake Bunyonyi.
Day 9: Lake Bunyonyi and Journey to Kampala
Morning on Lake Bunyonyi: guided island boat trip visiting Punishment Island, Bwama Island (former leprosy colony), and fishing community islands. Swim in the bilharzia-free lake if temperature permits. Afternoon departure from Bunyonyi for Kampala, approximately 6 hours via Mbarara. Alternatively, fly from Kisoro or Kabale to Entebbe (1 hour flight) to save road travel time and spend more time at the lake. Overnight in Kampala or at the airport hotel if flying from Entebbe.
Day 10: Departure
Morning in Kampala: optional city orientation including the Uganda Museum (excellent introduction to Ugandan cultural history), Kasubi Tombs (UNESCO-listed royal burial site of the Buganda kingdom), Owino market, or craft shopping at the Craft Village. Transfer to Entebbe International Airport for evening or overnight international departure.
Practical Notes
This itinerary requires three activity permits: chimpanzee trekking permit at Kibale ($200), gorilla trekking permit at Bwindi ($800), and optionally a second gorilla permit ($800) for day 8. Total permit cost per person: $1,000 to $1,800 depending on permit selection. Mid-range accommodation for 9 nights ($200 to $400 per person per night) brings the basic itinerary cost to approximately $4,000 to $6,000 per person for accommodation and permits, before transport, park fees, and other expenses.
Book all three activity permits as early as possible and build the itinerary dates around confirmed permit dates rather than choosing dates first and hoping permits are available. The Bwindi gorilla permit is the hardest to secure and should be the first booking anchor.
