Updated

Kampala’s nightlife is busy, friendly and runs late, especially from Thursday to Saturday. The main areas are Kololo and Nakasero for restaurants, lounges and rooftop bars, Kabalagala and Muyenga for a livelier local scene, and Bugolobi and Ntinda for neighbourhood bars. For something cultural, the Ndere Cultural Centre stages traditional music and dance evenings. Use app-based taxis or a trusted driver at night.

Where to go

Kololo, on a hill near the city centre, has many of the city’s upmarket restaurants and bars. Nakasero’s hotels have rooftop and terrace bars with city views. Kabalagala and the area around Ggaba Road are known for busy bars, music and late nights. Many venues host live bands or DJs, playing Ugandan and wider African music alongside international hits.

Food and drink

Kampala’s restaurants range from Ugandan local food to Indian, Ethiopian, Italian and Chinese, and many bars serve grilled meat and snacks. Local lagers and Uganda Waragi, a gin, are on every menu. Try a rolex, a chapati and egg roll, from a street stall. See our guides to Kampala restaurants and Ugandan drinks.

Cultural evenings

The Ndere Cultural Centre hosts traditional music and dance performances from across Uganda, usually with dinner, several evenings a week; check the schedule. It is a good introduction to Kiganda and other dances before heading to the parks. Read about the Ndere Cultural Centre.

Staying safe

Use Uber, Bolt or a driver arranged by your hotel rather than flagging cars or boda boda motorbike taxis at night. Keep valuables out of sight, watch your drink and agree prices before ordering in busy places. If you have an early start for Bwindi, keep the night short. The gorilla permit costs US$800, or US$600 in April, May and November. See our guide to safety in Uganda.
