Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is Uganda’s smallest national park and one of its most overlooked. Tucked into the Virunga volcanic range in southwestern Uganda, sharing borders with Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the DRC’s Virunga National Park, Mgahinga offers a different gorilla trekking experience from Bwindi — smaller, quieter, more dramatic in scenery, and with additional wildlife attractions that Bwindi does not offer. Where Is Mgahinga and What Makes It Different?
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park covers just 33.7 square kilometres in the extreme southwestern corner of Uganda, bordering Rwanda and the DRC. The park sits on the Ugandan slopes of three Virunga volcanoes: Mount Gahinga (3,474 m), Mount Sabyinyo (3,645 m), and Mount Muhavura (4,127 m). The park’s setting — between three dramatic volcanic peaks — gives it scenery that Bwindi cannot match. The volcanic landscape, bamboo forests at mid-elevation, and open moorlands at higher elevation create a visually spectacular backdrop for gorilla trekking that is unlike anything else in Uganda.
The key distinction from Bwindi: Mgahinga has only one habituated gorilla family, the Nyakagezi family, which ranges across the Ugandan, Rwandan, and DRC sides of the Virunga border. When the family moves across the international border — which is not uncommon — gorilla trekking at Mgahinga is temporarily paused. This cross-border ranging means Mgahinga’s gorilla permit availability can be unpredictable. When the Nyakagezi family is in Uganda and trekking is operating, the experience is excellent and often less crowded than Bwindi. When the family is across the border, Mgahinga offers other wildlife experiences but not gorilla trekking.
The Nyakagezi Gorilla Family
The Nyakagezi family is one of Uganda’s most studied gorilla groups. The family currently numbers approximately 19 individuals and is led by a dominant silverback. The family is fully habituated and has been the subject of continuous research since the 1990s. Trekking with the Nyakagezi family in Mgahinga involves the same one-hour encounter format as Bwindi, with a maximum group size of eight. The terrain in Mgahinga is different from Bwindi — more open in some areas due to the volcanic landscape and bamboo zones — which some trekkers find easier to navigate than Bwindi’s dense equatorial forest.
2027 Permit Prices at Mgahinga
The Uganda Wildlife Authority permit price for gorilla trekking at Mgahinga is the same as Bwindi: 800 USD per person for international visitors. There is no price advantage to Mgahinga over Bwindi in terms of permit cost. The practical advantage is often availability: because Mgahinga has only one gorilla family and trekking is sometimes unavailable when the family crosses the border, the park sees fewer booking requests than Bwindi. When the Nyakagezi family is confirmed in Uganda, permits may be available on shorter notice than Bwindi peak-season permits. Additional Activities in Mgahinga
Mgahinga offers attractions beyond gorilla trekking that make it worth visiting even if gorilla availability is uncertain. Golden monkey trekking: Mgahinga is one of only two places in the world where you can trek the endangered golden monkey (Cercopithecus kandti), a spectacularly coloured primate found only in the Virunga range. The golden monkey permit costs 60 USD and the experience is consistently described as charming and photogenic. Volcano hiking: all three Virunga volcanoes in the park can be climbed by fit visitors. Mount Muhavura (4,127 m) is a full-day summit trek offering spectacular views of Lake Edward, the Rwenzori Mountains, and on clear days, Lake Victoria. Batwa cultural experiences: Mgahinga is the ancestral territory of the Batwa people, who were displaced when the national park was created. The Batwa Trail programme offers a deeply moving cultural experience led by Batwa guides sharing the history and forest knowledge of their people.
Getting to Mgahinga
Mgahinga is approximately 540 kilometres from Kampala, slightly farther than the southern Bwindi sectors. The road journey takes eight to ten hours via Kabale and Kisoro. Kisoro is the nearest town to Mgahinga (approximately 15 kilometres from the park entrance) and has simple accommodation and basic services. Charter flights to Kisoro airstrip reduce the journey to under two hours from Entebbe. Most Mgahinga itineraries connect with a Bwindi visit in the same trip — the two parks are approximately two hours apart by road via Kisoro-Kabale, making them natural partners for a southwestern Uganda itinerary.
A Recommended Combined Bwindi and Mgahinga Itinerary
A seven-day itinerary that combines both parks: Day 1 — arrive Entebbe, overnight Kampala; Day 2 — charter flight to Kisoro or road journey, overnight near Mgahinga; Day 3 — golden monkey trekking at Mgahinga or Batwa Trail; Day 4 — gorilla trek at Mgahinga (if family is in Uganda, confirmed in advance) or transfer to Bwindi; Days 5-6 — gorilla trek at Bwindi (Rushaga or Buhoma sector), overnight at Bwindi lodge; Day 7 — charter flight back to Entebbe, international departure. This itinerary delivers maximum wildlife diversity in southwestern Uganda in a manageable week.
Is Mgahinga Right for You?
Mgahinga is the right choice if you want: dramatic volcanic scenery as the backdrop for your gorilla trek; golden monkey trekking as an add-on; a quieter, less-visited park experience; or if you are combining Uganda with Rwanda (Mgahinga is adjacent to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, which has its own mountain gorilla families).
