The Three-Day Kampala-Bwindi Express: Overview
Three days is the minimum for a Kampala-Bwindi gorilla trip that does not feel rushed. Day 1 is the journey to Bwindi — seven to nine hours by road, or under two hours by charter flight from Kajjansi or Entebbe. Day 2 is the gorilla trek — an early morning start, one hour with a mountain gorilla family, and an afternoon at the forest lodge. Day 3 is the return journey to Kampala — by road or charter flight. With this structure, you spend one full day in Bwindi (the gorilla day) and two days in transit. It works. Hundreds of Kampala-based residents and visitors make exactly this trip every year.
The Road Journey Option: Day by Day
The road from Kampala to Bwindi takes seven to nine hours depending on which sector you target. For a three-day trip, depart Kampala at 6:30 AM on Day 1. The route goes south through Masaka, then west to Mbarara, then south via Kabale toward Bwindi. A lunch stop in Mbarara or Kabale is standard. Arrive at Bwindi lodge by 3:30 to 4:30 PM depending on sector. Day 2: trek. Day 3: depart lodge at 7:00 AM, arrive Kampala by 4:00 to 5:00 PM. Road travel is excellent for experiencing Uganda’s countryside — the Kigezi highlands on the final stretch to Bwindi are among Uganda’s most beautiful landscapes. Use a reliable driver-guide who knows the road and can make the journey comfortable. A private vehicle costs approximately 350 to 500 USD for the return Kampala-Bwindi journey excluding fuel.
The Charter Flight Option: Faster and More Comfortable
Charter flights from Kajjansi airstrip (approximately 30 minutes from Kampala) or Entebbe airport to Kihihi (Buhoma sector) or Kisoro (Rushaga/Nkuringo) make the three-day Kampala-Bwindi trip significantly more comfortable. Fly out on Day 1 morning (approximately 45 minutes), trek Day 2, fly back Day 3 morning. Total air time each way: under one hour. The charter option converts a three-day road trip into a three-day gorilla-centred experience with minimal transit fatigue. Cost: approximately 350 to 500 USD per person each way, with prices reducing slightly for groups of three or more sharing an aircraft.
Permit Availability for Short-Notice Kampala-Based Bookings
Kampala-based travellers who are already in Uganda and want to trek on short notice face the same permit availability constraints as international visitors. Peak season permits (June to September, December) are often fully booked weeks or months in advance. Shoulder season permits (April-May, October-November) are more accessible on shorter notice. Accommodation for a Three-Day Trip
For a three-day express trip, one or two nights at a mid-range lodge near your sector is the right choice — no need for luxury accommodation on a short stay. Gorilla Valley Lodge (Rushaga), Nkuringo Bwindi Gorilla Lodge (budget), and Bwindi Buhoma Lodge offer clean, comfortable accommodation with good food at reasonable prices. Pack light for a three-day trip — you only need clothes for the trek day plus two travel days, a day pack for the trek, and your standard travel documents. The lodge provides all necessary bedding, towels, and meals.
Is Three Days Enough?
Three days is the minimum for a complete gorilla trekking experience from Kampala without feeling that you spent more time travelling than experiencing. It works, and thousands of travellers have done it successfully. If you can extend to four or five days — adding a forest walk, a second trek, or a stop at Lake Bunyonyi on the return journey — the experience is proportionally richer. But if three days is what you have, three days is absolutely enough to make the journey, complete the trek, and return to Kampala with one of the most powerful wildlife experiences of your life.
