If you only have a long weekend and you still want to stand a few metres from a wild silverback, this 3 day gorilla trekking itinerary uganda is the cleanest way to do it. You fly Entebbe to Kihihi airstrip, sleep two nights at the forest edge, trek with your assigned gorilla family, and fly back. No fourteen-hour road slog, no compromises on trek quality — just the trek itself, framed tightly around it.
This guide breaks the trip down hour by hour: the flight schedule, what your permit actually buys you, where to sleep in Buhoma or Rushaga, and what your final out-of-pocket looks like. It is written for booking — for the traveller who wants enough detail to say “yes” today and confirm tomorrow.
Why a fly-in 3-day Bwindi trip works
Uganda’s mountain gorillas live in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, in the country’s far southwest. The park is roughly 9 to 10 hours by road from Entebbe Airport — too far for a 3-day window unless you fly. Aerolink Uganda runs scheduled hops from Entebbe to Kihihi (for Buhoma and Ruhija sectors) and to Kisoro (for Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Mgahinga). The scheduled morning departure puts you at the airstrip before lunch, and a 60–90 minute transfer drops you at your lodge by mid-afternoon. That gives you the rest of the day to settle, eat, and sleep early before the trek.
Three days is the absolute minimum for a Bwindi trek that doesn’t feel rushed. Two days is technically possible (fly in morning, trek next day, fly back) but you arrive jet-lagged, you have no buffer if a flight is weather-delayed, and you miss the cultural and forest add-ons that make the trip memorable. Three days is the sweet spot: arrival day to recover, trekking day in the forest, departure day to fly out at a civil hour.
The 3 day gorilla trekking itinerary uganda — hour by hour
Day 1 — Entebbe to Bwindi by air
- 06:30 — Hotel pickup in Entebbe or Kampala. If you flew in overnight, you can start your trek day directly from the airport hotel.
- 07:30 — Check in at Entebbe’s domestic terminal (a separate building from international arrivals). Aerolink luggage limit is 15 kg total in soft-sided bags; pack your trekking kit in a duffel and leave a hard suitcase in storage at your Entebbe hotel.
- 08:30–09:00 — Scheduled departure for Kihihi or Kisoro. Flight time is roughly 90 minutes and the views over Lake Victoria, the Albertine Rift escarpment, and the crater fields of Queen Elizabeth National Park are worth a window seat on the left side.
- 10:30–11:00 — Land at Kihihi (for Buhoma) or Kisoro (for Rushaga or Nkuringo). Your driver-guide is waiting on the airstrip apron with a 4×4.
- 11:00–13:00 — Transfer to lodge. Kihihi to Buhoma is about 1 hour 15 minutes on a graded murram road through tea estates and small trading centres. Kisoro to Rushaga is closer to 2 hours but the views of the Virunga volcanoes are spectacular.
- 13:00–14:00 — Lunch at the lodge. Most Bwindi lodges plate a hot two-course menu by default.
- 14:30–17:30 — Optional Batwa community walk, a forest waterfall hike, or a basket-weaving cooperative visit. Pick one — your trek is tomorrow and you want to be on your feet, not exhausted.
- 18:30 — Pre-trek briefing with your guide. Final check on boots, gaiters, gloves, rain jacket, water, and lunch box. Lights out by 21:30.
Day 2 — Trekking day
- 05:30 — Wake, hot breakfast, and a flask of tea or coffee for the trail.
- 07:00 — Briefing at the sector headquarters (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, or Nkuringo, depending on which sector your permit assigned you). You’re sorted into a group of up to eight visitors and matched to one habituated gorilla family.
- 07:45 — Enter the forest with your ranger guide and trackers. Trek length varies wildly — from a one-hour stroll to a six-hour scramble, depending on where the family slept the night before. The minimum age to trek is 15.
- ~10:00–13:00 — Locate the family. You then have one full hour with them. No camera flash, no eating, no drinking near the gorillas, and you must stay 7 to 10 metres back. Bring a real camera if you have one — most phone shots come out underexposed in the canopy gloom.
- ~14:00–16:00 — Return hike, lunch in the forest or back at the lodge, and your trekking certificate is presented in the early evening.
- 17:00 onwards — Hot shower, gear dry-out, dinner, and a fire. You have earned all of it.
Day 3 — Fly back to Entebbe
- 07:00 — Breakfast and a slow checkout. Most fly-out flights are scheduled for late morning.
- 09:00 — Transfer to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip.
- 10:30–11:30 — Aerolink scheduled departure to Entebbe. You land at Entebbe by 13:00 with the rest of your day free for connections, a Lake Victoria lunch, or a same-day international flight (international check-in three hours before departure, please).
Permit cost and what it actually buys you
The Uganda gorilla permit is the single biggest line item on this trip and you must hold it before anything else gets booked. Pricing for foreign non-residents in 2026 is fixed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority:

The permit covers your park entry, your ranger guide, the trackers who locate the family before you arrive, and your one hour with the gorillas. It does not cover the porter (USD $20–25 tip, and worth every dollar — porters are local Batwa and Bakiga and the income matters), your transport, your lodge, or your flights. The minimum age is 15. Permits are released on a calendar basis and the dry months — January, February, June, July, August — sell out months ahead. April, May, and November are the wet months when the discounted $600 permit applies, and they are an underrated way to do this trip on a tighter budget.

Choosing a sector — Buhoma or Rushaga
For a fly-in 3-day trip, the two sectors that make the most sense are Buhoma (via Kihihi) and Rushaga (via Kisoro). Buhoma is the original sector and has the deepest lodge bench — Buhoma Lodge, Mahogany Springs, Bwindi Lodge, and Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp all sit minutes from the trailhead. Rushaga has the largest cluster of habituated families (eight at last count) and is the only sector offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Ruhija and Nkuringo are also superb but the road transfers are longer and they suit longer itineraries.
If your travel agent has not yet bought your permit, give them sector flexibility — “Buhoma or Rushaga, family of UWA’s choice” — because the dry months book out first and you’d rather have any permit than no permit. What to pack for a fly-in trekking trip
- Soft-sided duffel only (Aerolink rule): 15 kg max including hand luggage.
- Waterproof hiking boots, broken in. Not new boots from the box.
- Long trousers (gardening-tough fabric — not technical hiking pants), tucked into gaiters.
- Long-sleeved shirt and a packable rain shell. Bwindi is a rainforest; it rains in the dry season too.
- Gardening or work gloves to grip vines and nettles. The forest is called “impenetrable” for a reason.
- 2 litres of water minimum, a snack, and a rain cover for your camera bag.
- Camera with a fast lens (f/2.8 or wider) — the canopy is dark, even at noon.

Booking timeline — what to do, in what order
- 4–9 months ahead: Confirm trek dates, request a permit through a UWA-registered tour operator, and provisionally book your lodge.
- 3–6 months ahead: Pay your permit deposit and book Aerolink. Aerolink can be booked through your operator or direct on aerolinkuganda.com — flights run, but seats sell out in dry months.
- 2 months ahead: Confirm international flights into Entebbe. Add a one-night airport hotel for the night before your domestic departure.
- 1 month ahead: Final lodge balance, final permit balance, travel insurance with $50,000+ medevac cover.
- Day before: Re-pack into the 15 kg duffel. Confirm your domestic flight at the Aerolink desk.
