A 3-day fly-in gorilla trip is the fastest comfortable way to see mountain gorillas from Entebbe: fly to Kihihi or Kisoro on day 1, trek on day 2 and fly back on day 3 in time for an evening international flight. It replaces two 8–10 hour road days with flights of around an hour each way, and it costs more than a road trip mainly because of the flights, typically about US$300–450 per person each way on scheduled services.
This itinerary suits travellers who are short on time, visiting Uganda for gorillas only, or adding gorillas to a business trip or a Kenya safari. Below is how each day runs, which sector to choose, what it costs and the practical details that make a short trip work.
3-Day Bwindi Gorilla Trekking Itinerary: Fly-In Express Trip
Day 1: fly from Entebbe to Bwindi
Domestic flights leave from Entebbe’s domestic terminal, separate from the international arrivals hall. Aerolink, the main scheduled operator, usually flies to Kihihi and Kisoro early in the morning, around 07:00, with an extra mid-morning departure in the busier months. That means spending your first night in Entebbe, even if you landed late the evening before. Flight times are roughly an hour to Kisoro and a little longer to Kihihi if the plane stops on the way.
The baggage allowance is strict: 15 kg per person including hand luggage, in soft-sided bags, with any excess charged per kilo if there is space. Most travellers pack a duffel with trekking kit for three days and leave a suitcase at their Entebbe hotel.
On landing, your lodge or driver meets you at the airstrip. Kihihi is about 1–1.5 hours by road from Buhoma; Kisoro is about 1–1.5 hours from Rushaga and Nkuringo and 30 minutes from Mgahinga. You reach the lodge in time for lunch, with the afternoon free for a village walk or simply resting.
Day 2: gorilla trekking
After an early breakfast, you drive to the sector headquarters for the 07:30 briefing, where you are assigned a gorilla family and a group of up to eight people. The trek can take anywhere from under an hour to five hours to reach the family, followed by one hour with the gorillas and the walk back. Most people are at the lodge again between early and late afternoon.

Day 3: fly back to Entebbe
The return flights leave Kisoro and Kihihi in the morning and reach Entebbe around midday or early afternoon, depending on the route and season. That leaves comfortable time for most international departures, which tend to leave Entebbe in the evening or late at night. If your international flight leaves before mid-afternoon, add a night in Entebbe rather than relying on a tight connection; a delayed domestic flight should not cost you your journey home.
Which sector to choose
For a fly-in trip, the airstrip decides the sector. Buhoma, reached from Kihihi, has the widest choice of lodges and generally moderate treks, which makes it the most popular choice. Rushaga, reached from Kisoro, has the most gorilla families and is the only place for the Gorilla Habituation Experience. Nkuringo, also from Kisoro, has spectacular views but the hardest treks, and Mgahinga is the closest to Kisoro of all. Check permit availability first, then book the flight and lodge to match.

Booking in the right order
On a short trip, every part has to line up, so the order you book things in matters:
- Secure the gorilla permit for your trek date and sector.
- Book a lodge in that sector for two nights.
- Book the domestic flights to the matching airstrip.
- Book a night in Entebbe before the outbound flight.
- Book international flights that land the day before and leave after the return flight.

Is three days enough?
For the gorillas alone, yes — the fly-in version gives you a relaxed afternoon on arrival, a full trekking day and an easy return. What it does not give you is a spare day. If the trek is disrupted by illness or weather, there is no time to try again, and you see little of Uganda beyond Bwindi. If you can add even one day, a fourth day for a community walk, a second trek or golden monkeys in Mgahinga makes the trip feel far less rushed and protects your investment in the permit.
