Uganda gorilla trekking permits for 2027 are available now, and for peak season dates they are already filling. The limited daily quota — a maximum of eight visitors per habituated gorilla family per day — means that popular dates in June, July, August, and December sell out months in advance. If 2027 is your target year, here is why you should reserve your permit today and exactly how to do it.
How Many Gorilla Permits Are Available Per Day?
Uganda Wildlife Authority allows a maximum of eight visitors per habituated gorilla family per day. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park currently has 12 fully habituated gorilla families across four sectors: three in Buhoma, two in Ruhija, six in Rushaga, and two in Nkuringo. This means a theoretical maximum of 96 gorilla trekking permits per day at Bwindi (12 families x 8 visitors). Mgahinga Gorilla National Park adds a maximum of eight more (when the Nyakagezi family is in Uganda). In practice, some families are reserved for the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHE, maximum four visitors), reducing the standard permit pool. For 2027 peak season, the total available standard permits across Bwindi are approximately 80 to 88 per day — not enough to meet international demand for the most desirable dates.
When Does 2027 Peak Season Sell Out?
Based on recent booking patterns, 2027 June and July gorilla permits will be significantly booked by February-March 2027. August 2027 dates will sell out around the same time. December 2027 (Christmas and New Year weeks) sells out earliest of all — often by mid-2027. Operators and repeat travellers who know the booking cycle often secure permits for these dates in late 2026 or very early 2027. Shoulder season permits (April-May 2027, October-November 2027) remain available closer to travel date but still warrant booking two to three months in advance for desired sector and family assignments.
Why Reserve Now Rather Than Wait
There are three reasons to reserve 2027 gorilla permits now rather than closer to your travel date. Availability: peak season permits sell out. Waiting risks losing your target date entirely. Choice: early bookings have first choice of sector and gorilla family. Late bookings receive whatever is left. Price: gorilla permit prices have increased over time. The 800 USD per permit price is current; there is no guaranteed price lock for future-dated permits, but reserving now with a current-price quote protects against potential increases. Lodge availability: popular lodges near Bwindi fill simultaneously with permits. Early permit reservation allows simultaneous lodge booking — late permit acquisition risks finding the permit but no accommodation at the lodge you wanted.
How to Reserve Your 2027 Permit
Gorilla trekking permits are reserved through Uganda Wildlife Authority, either directly via the UWA booking portal or through a registered tour operator. Operator booking typically offers: faster permit confirmation, advice on sector and family selection, bundled accommodation and transport booking, and on-the-ground support that UWA’s direct booking cannot provide. A deposit is required to secure the permit — typically 25 to 30% of the total package price, with the balance due 30 to 60 days before the trek date. Contact us with your preferred 2027 dates and we will check current availability, advise on the best available sector and family assignment, and secure your permit with minimum delay.
The 2027 Gorilla Trekking Calendar: Best Months
June to September 2027: Uganda’s long dry season. Best conditions for road travel, clearest skies for photography, and the most reliable dry forest trekking. These are the most popular months and permit competition is highest. December 2027: the short dry season and popular holiday booking window. Christmas and New Year permits are the scarcest of the year. April to May 2027: the long rains bring lush forest, fewer tourists, and better lodge availability. Excellent gorilla photography conditions with dramatic mist and vivid greens. October to November 2027: the short rains produce similar conditions to April-May, with better availability than peak season and competitive pricing on accommodation and transport. All months offer excellent gorilla encounters — the gorillas are present and active year-round. The best month for your trip is the one that works for your schedule and budget.
