Gorilla trekking from France: Paris to Bwindi guide

Gorilla trekking from France is one of the easier European routes thanks to good Paris-Brussels and Paris-Doha connections to East Africa. Total flight time from Paris to Entebbe is 9–14 hours depending on routing. The visa, vaccines, and trip planning are all straightforward for French passport holders.

Flights from France

  • CDG → Brussels → Kigali → drive to Bwindi on Brussels Airlines. ~12 hours total. EUR 800–1,400. Useful for southern Bwindi sectors.
  • CDG → Doha → Entebbe on Qatar Airways. ~13 hours. EUR 750–1,200.
  • CDG → Addis Ababa → Entebbe on Ethiopian. ~13 hours. EUR 700–1,100.
  • CDG → Istanbul → Entebbe on Turkish Airlines. ~14 hours. EUR 700–1,100.
  • CDG → London → Entebbe on Air France/British Airways + Uganda Airlines. ~14 hours.

From Lyon, Marseille, Nice: connect via CDG, Brussels, or Doha; add EUR 100–200.

Cost expectations for French travellers

For a 9-day mid-range Uganda gorilla trek including international flights:

  • Flights: EUR 750–1,400.
  • Permit: EUR ~750 peak (USD $800), EUR ~565 low season (USD $600).
  • In-country tour: EUR 2,200–4,000 per person (mid to luxury, fly-in trek, transfers, lodges, meals).
  • Visa: USD $50 (~EUR 47).
  • Insurance: EUR 100–250.
  • Vaccines: EUR 80–280.
  • Tips: EUR 100–200.
  • All-in: EUR 4,200–7,200 per person.

Entry requirements for French passport holders

  • Passport valid 6+ months from entry, 2 blank pages.
  • Uganda e-visa (USD $50, 2–5 days at visas.immigration.go.ug) OR East African Tourist Visa (USD $100, covers Uganda + Rwanda + Kenya).
  • Yellow fever vaccine certificate — mandatory for entry.

The Kigali option for French travellers

Many French trekkers fly into Kigali rather than Entebbe and drive south through the Cyanika border into Bwindi’s southern sectors (Rushaga, Nkuringo). The drive is 3.5 hours, the flight is shorter (no domestic leg), and the cost can work out lower. Trade-off: you miss the rest of Uganda’s safari circuit and Kigali sometimes has more flight delays in rainy season.

Best months for French travellers

French school holidays generally align with Uganda’s dry seasons:

  • February break: tail of dry season, excellent.
  • Easter: mixed, transitioning to long rains.
  • July–August summer: peak dry, peak demand.
  • Toussaint (late October): short rains starting; trekkable but wetter.
  • Christmas/New Year: peak dry, peak prices.

Best value windows: late November and late January — good weather, lower prices.

Health prep

  • Yellow fever — required for entry. Centre de Vaccinations Internationales (Pasteur, Air France, etc.) — EUR 60–90.
  • Malaria prophylaxis — Malarone (atovaquone/proguanil) widely used. EUR 35–50 for 10 days.
  • Hepatitis A, Typhoid — routine for East Africa.
  • Tdap booster.
  • Plan vaccines 8 weeks before departure at a CVI.

Insurance — France-specific

French insurers that cover gorilla trekking:

  • April Voyage — comprehensive coverage including trekking.
  • Chapka Direct — popular with adventure travellers.
  • AVA Insurance — long-stay and round-the-world cover.
  • AXA Schengen — basic; check for trekking exclusions.
  • Most carte bancaire travel insurance (CB Premier, Visa Premier) excludes trekking above 2,000 m.

Budget EUR 100–250 for 10-day cover with full medical evacuation.

Money

  • Bring USD in clean post-2013 bills.
  • French Visa/Mastercard works at lodges; less at smaller establishments.
  • Boursorama or Revolut cards for low-fee ATM withdrawals (UGX).

Language

English is the official language in Uganda and widely spoken. Some French is spoken in tourism but expect English to dominate. Most rangers and lodge staff are fluent in English; guides on request can sometimes speak basic French — ask the operator at booking.

Trip shapes that suit French travellers

  • 9 days: Uganda only — gorillas + Queen Elizabeth + Kibale chimps.
  • 12 days: Uganda + Rwanda — two gorilla treks at lower combined cost than two Rwanda treks.
  • 14 days: Uganda + Zanzibar — direct Entebbe-Stone Town flights.
