Gorilla knuckle-walking distributes weight more efficiently than walking upright for an animal of a gorilla’s size and body composition, and the biomechanics of this gait — which looks ungainly to human observers but is in fact a highly optimised locomotion strategy — are one of the clearest examples of how evolution produces specific solutions to specific physical problems. Understanding why gorillas walk the way they walk, and what the biomechanics of knuckle-walking actually involve, illuminates a different aspect of the gorilla encounter: what you are seeing when a large silverback moves through the forest is not a compromised attempt at upright movement but the perfectly suited locomotion strategy of an animal that is exactly as it evolved to be.
What Knuckle-Walking Is
Knuckle-walking is a form of quadrupedal locomotion in which the upper body’s weight is borne on the middle segments of the fingers (the dorsal surface of the middle phalanges) rather than on the palm or fingertips. The hand is curled into a fist-like shape, with the knuckles providing the contact surface. The gait is used by gorillas and chimpanzees (bonobos also knuckle-walk; orangutans use a different quadrupedal gait called fist-walking).
The key distinction between knuckle-walking and other forms of quadrupedal movement is the position of the wrist: in knuckle-walking, the wrist is held in a rigid, extended position relative to the knuckles, which transmits force more efficiently along the arm and reduces the bending stress on the hand and wrist joints compared to alternative postures.
The Biomechanics of Efficiency
For an animal as large as a gorilla silverback — often 200 kilograms or more — the mechanics of locomotion become a serious engineering problem. The force that the legs and arms must generate to move that mass, accelerate it, and decelerate it safely requires a structural solution that minimises peak stress on joints and bones while still transmitting the forces needed for efficient movement.
Why Not Walk on Palms?
A flat-palmed quadrupedal walk — which is used by bears and some other large mammals — would require the gorilla’s wrist joint to resist significant bending forces as the weight is transferred from heel-strike to toe-off in each step. At gorilla body weights, these forces would be sufficient to risk joint damage over time.
Why Not Walk Upright?
Bipedal walking at gorilla body weights requires the spine and lower limb joints to bear the full weight of the upper body during each step, without the distribution of load across four limbs. Gorilla skeletal anatomy — the proportions of the limbs, the structure of the hip and knee joints, the curvature of the spine — is not optimised for bipedal locomotion. Bipedal walking is possible for gorillas but energetically costly and structurally suboptimal for their body plan.
The Knuckle-Walking Solution
Knuckle-walking allows the gorilla to bear roughly equal weight on all four limbs while keeping the hand and wrist in a position that minimises peak stress and maximises structural efficiency. The rigid wrist position in knuckle-walking transfers load directly up the arm rather than through a series of joint flexions, reducing the energy cost of each stride and the cumulative wear on joints over a lifetime of locomotion.
Studies using force plates and gait analysis have shown that gorilla knuckle-walking is more energetically efficient than human bipedal walking at equivalent speeds when the comparison accounts for body weight. The apparent awkwardness of knuckle-walking is a human aesthetic judgment applied to a gait that is not designed for humans.
Speed and Agility
Despite the large body mass, gorillas are capable of impressive speed when motivated. A silverback in full display or in pursuit of an intruder can reach speeds of approximately 40 kilometres per hour over short distances — comparable to a human sprinter at full speed, in an animal that weighs three to four times as much. This speed is achieved through the same knuckle-walking gait, adapted for higher stride frequency and longer stride length.
The combination of speed and power available to a knuckle-walking gorilla is part of what makes a silverback’s movement so impressive to observe. What looks like ponderous movement at rest resolves, in a display or a charge, into something extremely fast. The transition — from the slow, deliberate movement of feeding to the explosive burst of a chest-beat run — is one of the most striking demonstrations of what the gorilla body is capable of.
The Skeleton That Knuckle-Walking Built
The gorilla skeleton reflects millions of years of knuckle-walking adaptation. The bones of the hand and wrist are structured to distribute load efficiently in the knuckle-walking position. The shoulder joint is oriented to allow the extended reach of quadrupedal movement while still permitting the overhead reach needed for climbing. The spine is less curved in the lumbar region than human spines, reflecting the reduced requirement for shock absorption in a four-limbed gait.
These skeletal differences are part of the 1.7% of the genome that diverged between human and gorilla lineages over 10 million years of separate evolution. The adaptations are specific, functional, and visible in the skeleton of any adult gorilla.
Watching the Gait on a Trek
