This 8-day trip packs four of Uganda’s highlights into one route: the source of the Nile and adventure activities at Jinja, white rhino tracking at Ziwa, chimpanzees in Kibale and mountain gorillas in Bwindi. It involves several long road days and a flight back from Bwindi at the end, so it suits active travellers who want variety rather than a slow pace. Here is the day-by-day plan.

Days 1–2: Entebbe and Jinja

Day 1: arrive at Entebbe and drive east to Jinja, about 3 hours through Kampala, or rest in Entebbe if you land late. Day 2: take a boat to the source of the Nile, where the river leaves Lake Victoria, then choose an afternoon activity: white-water rafting, kayaking, a sunset cruise or quad biking. Days 3–4: Ziwa rhinos and the road west

Day 3: drive north-west to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, about 4–5 hours, and track southern white rhinos on foot with a ranger in the afternoon; stay at Ziwa or nearby Masindi. Days 5–6: Chimpanzees and Queen Elizabeth

Day 5: track chimpanzees in Kibale in the morning, with an hour in the presence of a habituated community, and walk the Bigodi wetland in the afternoon. The chimp permit is US$250, rising to US$300 from 1 January 2027. Day 6: drive south through Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Ishasha sector, known for tree-climbing lions, to Buhoma in northern Bwindi, about 6–7 hours including game viewing.

Days 7–8: Gorillas and departure

Day 7: gorilla trekking after the 8:00 am briefing, from one to six hours or more, with one hour in the company of a habituated family; the permit costs US$800, or US$600 in April, May and November. Day 8: fly from Kihihi airstrip to Entebbe in the morning to connect with an evening international flight. Driving back takes 9–10 hours, which is too long for a same-day departure. The rhino tracking at Ziwa on the Masindi highway between Kampala and Murchison fits into an 8-day itinerary as a natural addition to the Murchison leg — a two-hour stop at the sanctuary that adds a fifth species of large mammal to the itinerary without requiring a dedicated travel day. The 8-day itinerary’s most operationally efficient version uses a domestic flight on one leg — typically from Entebbe to Kidepo if the itinerary includes northern Uganda, or from Fort Portal to Kisoro if the full overland circuit would otherwise consume an additional driving day. The domestic flight cost ($100-200 per person) converts several hours of vehicle travel into 45 minutes of flying time and is almost always worth the price when the alternative is a full day of road transfer that eliminates a wildlife activity from the itinerary.
