7-Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking Itinerary

The Essential Uganda Gorilla Safari

A 7-day Uganda gorilla trekking itinerary is the minimum time needed to combine the gorilla trekking experience at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with meaningful wildlife and landscape experiences along the route. Seven days from arrival at Entebbe to departure allows for the long road or flight to Bwindi, a gorilla trekking day (or two, if budget allows two permits), one or two supporting activities, and the return journey — creating a focused, high-quality first encounter with Uganda’s most compelling wildlife offering. This itinerary covers the classic Bwindi-focused routing with optional extensions.

Day 1: Arrival and Entebbe

Arrive at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to accommodation in Entebbe or Kampala. Most international flights to Uganda arrive in the evening or overnight, making the first day an arrival-and-orientation day rather than a full activity day. Entebbe town is a pleasant base for arrival night — the former colonial capital sits on a peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria and has several good hotels within 20 minutes of the airport. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (formerly Entebbe Zoo) is worth an hour if you have a morning before departing for western Uganda — it holds shoebill storks and other Uganda wildlife in a conservation education context that provides an introduction to the animals you will see in the wild.

Day 2: Drive to Bwindi (or Fly to Kihihi)

Depart Entebbe or Kampala early (6 to 7 am) for the 8 to 10 hour drive to Bwindi. For Buhoma sector, the route follows the Kampala-Masaka-Mbarara-Kabale highway then northwest through Butogota. Breaks at the equator crossing, in Mbarara for lunch, and in Kabale allow the day’s driving to be interspersed with stops. Alternatively, fly from Kajjansi airstrip to Kihihi (approximately 45 minutes) and transfer to Buhoma by road. Arrive at your Buhoma lodge in the late afternoon. Evening briefing with lodge staff on trek day logistics. Overnight in Buhoma.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

The centrepiece of the itinerary. Depart lodge by 7:30 am for the sector headquarters and morning briefing. Groups are assigned to gorilla families; ranger-guides and trackers lead the trek into the forest. Trek time to the gorilla family varies from 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the family’s location. One hour with the gorillas. Return to sector headquarters. Most visitors are back at their lodge by early to mid-afternoon, with the rest of the day for rest, processing the experience, a guided nature walk, or the community village programme. Overnight in Buhoma.

Day 4: Bwindi Optional Activities and Depart

An optional second gorilla trek permit (if budget allows) provides a second encounter on day 4, with a different gorilla family if available. Without a second permit, day 4 activities in Buhoma include the guided forest walk (bird watching, nature interpretation), the Munyaga River walk, community programme at Buhoma village, or simply enjoying the forest-edge atmosphere of the lodge grounds. Depart Buhoma mid-day or afternoon for the journey to the next destination. For a 7-day itinerary, the day 4 routing options depend on whether the rest of the itinerary includes Queen Elizabeth or proceeds directly back toward Entebbe.

Day 5: Queen Elizabeth National Park

If routing through western Uganda on the return, Day 5 is spent in Queen Elizabeth National Park — approximately 2.5 to 3 hours drive from Buhoma via Ishasha. Afternoon game drive in the park’s savannah and crater lake areas, arriving at Mweya Peninsula lodge in time for sunset over the Kazinga Channel. This day transitions from the forest gorilla experience to the savannah wildlife diversity that represents Uganda’s other wildlife facet.

Day 6: Queen Elizabeth Activities

Morning Kazinga Channel boat cruise — one of Uganda’s finest wildlife experiences, passing banks of hippos and crocodiles alongside extraordinary water bird diversity. Afternoon game drive in the Mweya area for Uganda kob, buffalo, elephant, and predators. Optional afternoon community programme or craft visit in Kasese. Overnight at Mweya lodge or Kazinga Channel camp.

Day 7: Return to Entebbe

Early morning departure from Queen Elizabeth for the drive back to Entebbe, approximately 5 to 6 hours. Alternatively, fly from Kasese airstrip to Entebbe (approximately 1 hour) to save road travel time on the final day. Airport transfer and departure from Entebbe International Airport. International flights from Entebbe typically depart in the evening or overnight, allowing for a full final day’s drive or activities before departure.

Variations and Extensions

The 7-day framework above is the minimum framework for a Bwindi-focused trip. Common extensions include: adding a Kibale Forest chimpanzee trekking day between Queen Elizabeth and the return to Entebbe (extending to 8 to 9 days), adding Lake Bunyonyi as an overnight stop between Bwindi and Queen Elizabeth (extending to 8 days with a beautiful lake night), adding a second gorilla trek permit for a double-trek day at Bwindi (same number of days, higher budget), or extending the entire circuit to 10 days with more time at each destination.

Budgeting for the 7-Day Itinerary

The cost of a 7-day Uganda gorilla trekking itinerary depends heavily on accommodation choices and whether to fly or drive. The single largest cost is the gorilla permit: $800 per person. Mid-range accommodation (lodges from $200 to $400 per person per night) for 6 nights, vehicle hire or tour package transport, and park fees total approximately $2,500 to $4,000 per person depending on choices. Luxury lodge accommodation (from $500 to $800+ per person per night) increases the total to $5,000 to $8,000 per person. Budget approaches with camping and guesthouse accommodation can reduce accommodation costs significantly, though the gorilla permit cost is fixed regardless of budget level.

Final Thoughts

Seven days is enough to do Uganda’s gorilla trekking justice if the itinerary is focused and travel logistics are executed efficiently. The combination of Bwindi gorilla trekking with even a day or two in Queen Elizabeth creates a trip that conveys Uganda’s wildlife diversity beyond the single gorilla encounter. Plan the gorilla permit booking first — it is the fixed point around which everything else is arranged — and build the rest of the itinerary around it.
