October brings Uganda’s short rains, so gorilla trekking in October means more frequent showers, often in the afternoon, and muddier trails than in the dry season. The permit is still US$800 (the US$600 low-season rate applies only in April, May and November), but demand is moderate, so permits and lodges are easier to book than in July or August. The forest is green, visitors are fewer, and treks run every day, so October suits travellers who want a quieter trip and do not mind some rain.
Weather in October
At Bwindi’s altitude, temperatures remain mild, around 10–15°C at dawn and low 20s°C in the afternoon. The short rains, roughly October to November, bring showers on many days, but they are usually less prolonged than the long rains of April. Mornings are often clear, and many treks finish before the heaviest rain. See our guides to weather at Bwindi and checking the forecast.
Trekking in October
Expect some mud and slippery slopes, so wear waterproof boots with good grip and use a walking stick. A porter, at about US$15–20, is especially helpful. The gorillas are tracked every morning and are found as reliably as in any month. Rain can make photography harder, so bring a rain cover; see our guide to trekking in the rain. Savanna parks are greener, with fewer vehicles at sightings.
Booking and events
With moderate demand, booking one to three months ahead is usually enough, though groups should book earlier. Uganda’s Independence Day on 9 October is a public holiday with celebrations; parks run normally. If you can travel in November instead, the permit drops to US$600. See our guides to public holidays and permit availability.
What to pack
Bring a good rain jacket and waterproof or quick-drying trousers, gaiters, gardening gloves, a warm fleece for mornings, a dry bag for electronics and spare socks. Insect repellent is useful as insects increase with the rains. See our packing list, compare September and November, or read our guide to the best time for gorilla trekking.
