What makes a great forest view lodge
The best forest view lodges at Bwindi share three characteristics: elevation above the forest canopy (providing a broad view rather than a wall of trees at close range), orientation toward the park boundary rather than toward the access road, and outdoor space — a veranda, deck or terrace — designed for sitting and watching the forest rather than simply passing through. The view from inside the room matters less than the view from the space where you will spend most of your lodge time.
1. Bwindi Lodge (Nkuringo)
The most dramatic forest views of any Bwindi property: eight cottages at 2,200 metres looking directly across the Bwindi canopy to the Congolese mountains beyond. The elevation and orientation produce a panoramic view that encompasses the full depth of the forest from its upper edge into the valley system below. Morning and evening light on the canopy from this position is extraordinary. Each cottage terrace is oriented to capture the full view.
2. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge (Nkuringo)
Similar elevation to Bwindi Lodge, with twelve cottages each positioned to face the forest. The outdoor spaces — fire pits, reading corners, private terraces — are all designed around the view. Clouds’ positioning provides a view that includes the Virunga volcanic range in Rwanda on clear days, creating a perspective that contextualises Bwindi within the broader mountain gorilla range across three countries.
3. Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp (Buhoma)
A different kind of forest view: not above the canopy but at its edge, with eight tents positioned on the park boundary so that the forest begins immediately beyond the camp perimeter. The view is intimate rather than panoramic — dense forest at close range rather than a broad canopy perspective. Red-tailed monkeys, various forest birds and occasionally the sounds of distant gorilla vocalisations are part of the daily experience from camp.
4. Gorilla Heights Lodge (Rushaga)
A high-altitude position above Rushaga sector delivering views across the forest toward the Virunga volcanoes on the Uganda-Rwanda border. The lodge’s terrace and main public spaces are oriented toward the forest view. Rushaga’s position in Bwindi’s southern sector means the view includes the forest sections used by the highest concentration of habituated families — on clear mornings, guides can point out the approximate areas where the gorilla families are likely moving.
5. Mahogany Springs Lodge (Buhoma)
Valley views from Buhoma’s ridge rather than direct forest views, but with a pool positioned to maximise the prospect across the Buhoma valley to the forest beyond. The lodge’s elevated position within the Buhoma sector provides one of the best valley-to-forest perspectives in the northern sector. The pool deck is the best single viewing position on the property — a practical reason to choose accommodation with pool access beyond the comfort function.
Booking for views
When booking any Bwindi lodge, ask specifically which rooms have direct forest views versus valley or garden views — most properties have varying room positions, and the difference in the experience can be significant. Requesting a forest-facing room at reservation time, even if the property does not advertise room categories formally, frequently results in the allocation of the best-positioned room available on your dates.
