Uganda national parks ranked: which to visit on your safari

Uganda has ten national parks covering 3.8 million hectares — from the mountain gorilla forests of the west to the semi-arid savanna of the northeast. Not all are equal in visitor experience, accessibility or wildlife density. This is an honest ranking of Uganda’s national parks for safari visitors planning their itinerary.

1. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

The undisputed highlight of any Uganda safari: home to nearly half the world’s mountain gorillas, 23 Albertine Rift endemic bird species, and the most biodiverse forest in East Africa. The gorilla trekking experience is unique in the world. The park’s four sectors, range of lodge options and excellent guide quality make it the best-managed wildlife encounter in Uganda. Essential for any Uganda visit.

2. Queen Elizabeth National Park

Uganda’s most visited park after Bwindi, Queen Elizabeth offers the Big Five (minus rhino), tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector, the Kazinga Channel boat cruise for hippos and elephants, and chimpanzee tracking in the Kyambura Gorge. The park’s diversity of habitats — savanna, forest, wetland, crater lakes — produces a range of wildlife encounters unmatched by any single-habitat park. Three to four hours from Bwindi.

3. Murchison Falls National Park

Uganda’s largest park centres on the Victoria Nile and the spectacular Murchison Falls — the world’s most powerful waterfall by pressure, where the Nile forces through a 7-metre gap. The north bank game drives produce lions, elephants, giraffes and buffaloes; the launch trip to the base of the falls passes hippo pools and Nile crocodiles; the nearby Budongo Forest offers chimpanzee tracking. Six to seven hours from Bwindi; best combined on a longer ten-day itinerary.

4. Kibale National Park

The chimpanzee capital of East Africa: the highest density of primates of any African forest, with habituated chimpanzee groups offering consistently excellent encounters. Thirteen primate species in a single park, plus excellent birding in the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary adjacent to the park. Three to four hours from Bwindi; the natural pairing with a Bwindi visit on a western Uganda circuit.

5. Kidepo Valley National Park

Uganda’s most remote and least visited major park, in the far northeast near the South Sudan border, is consistently rated by returning visitors as their most memorable Uganda wildlife experience. The semi-arid Narus Valley game drives produce lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, ostriches and Burchell’s zebra — species not found elsewhere in Uganda. The park’s remoteness (charter flight recommended) means visitor numbers are low and encounters are private. A Kidepo visit requires a separate trip from Bwindi.

6–10. The remaining parks

Mgahinga Gorilla NP — gorilla trekking, golden monkeys, volcano hikes; best as a Bwindi complement. Lake Mburo NP — the only place to see zebra in southern Uganda; accessible on the Kampala–Bwindi drive. Semuliki NP — remote, rarely visited, with Congo Basin forest birds not found elsewhere in Uganda. Mount Elgon NP — a volcanic caldera hike with elephant-carved caves; eastern Uganda specialist. Rwenzori Mountains NP — East Africa’s highest mountain range with technical glacier trekking; specialist alpinist destination.
