Two weeks is enough time to experience two of Africa’s finest wildlife encounters: gorilla trekking in Uganda and the Serengeti in Tanzania. The routing is well-established, the logistics are manageable, and the combined experience represents one of the finest two-week trips available to any traveller on earth in 2027. This post provides a practical day-by-day framework for the trip, explains what to expect at each stage, and covers the logistics, costs, and timing considerations that make it work.
The Routing: Uganda First, Tanzania Second
The standard routing for a Uganda-Tanzania combination starts in Entebbe (Uganda’s international airport, served by direct flights from Doha, Dubai, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Amsterdam, and London). From Entebbe, you travel to the Bwindi area for gorilla trekking, then return to Entebbe (or proceed via Queen Elizabeth National Park), fly from Entebbe to Kilimanjaro or Nairobi, and proceed to the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem for the savanna safari component. Alternatively, some travellers do Tanzania first and Uganda second, which works equally well in logistical terms.
The reason most routing advisors recommend Uganda first is practical: gorilla trekking permits in Uganda are the hardest element to schedule flexibly because they must be booked in advance and are date-specific. Building the gorilla trek at the beginning of the trip — when you have the most flexibility if weather or health requires adjustments — is prudent. The Serengeti is more flexible about timing, as game drives can be rescheduled without permit complications.
A Day-by-Day Framework
Days 1-2: Fly to Entebbe, rest and acclimatise, optional city tour of Kampala. Day 3: Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park (6 to 7 hours), afternoon game drive. Day 4: Morning game drive and boat safari on Kazinga Channel, drive to Bwindi (3 to 4 hours). Day 5: Gorilla trekking in Bwindi (the main event — allow a full day). Day 6: Optional Batwa Cultural Trail or Bwindi community activities, afternoon birding. Day 7: Drive back toward Kampala via Ishasha (optional tree-climbing lions en route), night in Kampala or Entebbe. Day 8: Fly Entebbe to Kilimanjaro or Nairobi, connect to Serengeti (by charter flight to airstrip). Day 9: Full day Serengeti game drives (central Serengeti, Seronera Valley for cats). Day 10: Game drives, afternoon at leisure. Day 11: Drive or fly to northern Serengeti if Migration season (July to October) — best river crossing areas. Day 12: Full day in northern Serengeti or Mara. Day 13: Drive to Ngorongoro Crater area, afternoon in crater. Day 14: Morning in Ngorongoro Crater, afternoon transfer to Kilimanjaro or Arusha for overnight. Day 15: Fly home.
Timing Considerations
Timing Considerations
Gorilla trekking in Uganda is excellent year-round; the dry seasons (June to September, December to February) make forest trails more manageable but trekking is feasible in all seasons. The Serengeti Migration river crossings are July to October in the northern Serengeti; Ngorongoro is best December to March when wildebeest calve on the short grass plains. A trip in July or August captures both good gorilla trekking conditions and peak Migration season — the optimal two-week combination for 2027.
Cost Framework
Uganda component (7 nights, 1 gorilla trek): USD 3,000 to 6,000 per person depending on lodge tier. Tanzania component (7 nights, Serengeti and Ngorongoro): USD 4,000 to 10,000 per person depending on lodge tier and whether private vehicle charter is used. International flights: variable by origin. Total: USD 7,000 to 16,000 per person excluding international flights for the full two-week itinerary.
