The eight-hour drive to Bwindi is one of the most-cited deterrents in gorilla trekking Uganda planning. It sounds like an endurance test. Is it actually eight hours? Is there a way around it? And if you do drive, what is it actually like? Here are all the options explained honestly.
The Road Distance: What the Numbers Actually Say
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is approximately 475 kilometres from Kampala by road (to Buhoma sector in the north) and approximately 515 kilometres to the southern sectors (Rushaga, Nkuringo). On Uganda’s main highway to Mbarara and then via Kabale, the drive takes seven to nine hours depending on traffic, road condition, and which sector you are heading to. This is not eight hours of motorway driving — it is seven to nine hours on East African roads that include urban sections, occasional road works, and the highland climbing roads through the Kigezi highlands. Modern 4WD vehicles manage the road comfortably; the last sections to some lodges are unpaved but maintained.
What the Drive Is Actually Like
The Kampala-to-Bwindi drive is one of Uganda’s most scenic road journeys. The route passes through the Rift Valley, tea estates around Kabale, the spectacular Kigezi highlands (known as the Switzerland of Africa), and the final forested approach to the park. The first two hours from Kampala are the least scenic — urban and suburban Kampala can be slow. Once past Mbarara the road opens up and the scenery becomes excellent. The mountain roads toward Kabale and Kisoro are genuinely beautiful — rolling green hills, small farming communities, dramatic volcanic peaks on clear days. Many clients who were dreading the drive report that they enjoyed it. The journey is part of the experience.
The Charter Flight Option
Aerolink Uganda and other charter operators fly from Entebbe or Kajjansi airstrip (near Kampala) to Kihihi airstrip (serving Buhoma sector, 30-45 min drive from the park entrance) and to Kisoro airstrip (serving Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors, 45-60 min drive). Flight time is approximately 45 minutes to one hour. Total journey time from Entebbe door to Bwindi lodge: under two hours. The charter option is the game-changer for time-constrained travellers and those who genuinely cannot face a full day of road travel. Costs are approximately 300 to 500 USD per person each way and vary by aircraft and number of passengers.
The Hybrid Option: Drive One Way, Fly the Other
A popular approach for travellers who want the scenic road experience but not in both directions is to drive to Bwindi and fly back — or vice versa. Driving to Bwindi allows you to see the countryside, stop for lunch in Kabale, and arrive with the anticipation of a full day’s journey. Flying back after the trek means your return to Entebbe is quick and you do not spend your post-gorilla energy on another eight hours of driving. This combination works very well for seven to ten day itineraries and we build it into many of our packages.
Breaking the Drive Into Two Days
Many itineraries build an overnight stop into the Bwindi journey — typically at a mid-range guesthouse or lodge in Kabale or near Lake Bunyonyi. Lake Bunyonyi is one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa — a crater lake with 29 islands, dramatic hillside terracing, and excellent accommodation. Stopping here for a night breaks the drive into two comfortable sections (three to four hours each day), adds a genuinely worthwhile destination to the itinerary, and means you arrive at Bwindi rested rather than road-weary. This approach is particularly recommended for travellers who find long drives tiring.

For travellers with seven days or more in Uganda, the road journey to Bwindi — ideally broken with a Lake Bunyonyi overnight — is a genuine part of the Uganda experience and worth making. For travellers with four to five days, the charter flight is the practical choice. For travellers who are physically fine with long drives, the road is excellent value and scenically rewarding.
