Gorilla trekking from the USA: flights, costs, and planning

Gorilla trekking from the USA is a longer trip than from anywhere else in our client base, and the planning rewards extra thought. The flights, the time-zone shift, and the visa logistics all need attention. This guide covers what works for American travellers booking a Uganda gorilla trek in 2026.

Flights from major US gateways

The three best routings to Entebbe (EBB) from the USA:

  • JFK / EWR / IAD → Entebbe via Doha (Qatar Airways) or Istanbul (Turkish). 18–22 hours total. USD $1,200–1,800 round trip economy.
  • ATL / IAD → Addis Ababa → Entebbe on Ethiopian Airlines. Often the shortest total flight time. USD $1,100–1,600.
  • JFK → Amsterdam → Kigali → drive to Bwindi on KLM/Brussels Airlines. Useful if combining Uganda with Rwanda.

From West Coast (LAX, SFO, SEA): add 5–6 hours and around USD $300 vs East Coast.

Total trip cost expectations

A full 7-day Uganda gorilla trek from the US, mid-range to high-end, typically lands at:

  • International flights: USD $1,200–1,800 per person.
  • Permit: USD $800 (or USD $600 in low season).
  • In-country tour: USD $2,500–4,500 per person (lodges, vehicles, in-country flights, all meals, park fees).
  • Travel insurance: USD $150–300.
  • Visa: USD $50 e-visa or USD $100 East African Tourist Visa.
  • Tips: USD $150–300 (rangers, drivers, lodge staff).
  • All-in: USD $4,800–7,500 per person.

Entry requirements

US passport holders need:

  • Passport valid 6+ months from entry, with 2 blank pages.
  • Uganda e-visa (apply at visas.immigration.go.ug, USD $50, 2–5 days processing) OR East African Tourist Visa (USD $100, covers Uganda + Rwanda + Kenya).
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory; valid for life from a single dose).

Time and pacing

Uganda is GMT+3. From US East Coast that is +7 hours, from West Coast +10 hours. Plan two nights of light recovery on arrival before the trek — Entebbe and Lake Mburo are gentle stops. Then trek on day 3 or 4 of the trip with rested legs.

Minimum trip length to do a single gorilla trek from the US: 7 days door to door (1.5 days flying each way + 4 in-country days). The standard recommendation is 9–10 days to allow for the wider safari (chimps, savannah, return). For 14 days, add Murchison Falls or beach time in Zanzibar.

Domestic flight: skip the long road

The drive from Entebbe to Bwindi is 9–10 hours on roads that get rough past Mbarara. Most US clients fly Aerolink or Bar Aviation from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip — about USD $250–350 each way, 1 hour 15 minutes flight time. This compresses Bwindi from a full day’s travel each way to a half-day. Strongly recommended.

Health prep

  • Yellow fever vaccine (mandatory for entry).
  • Malaria prophylaxis (Malarone is best for short trips).
  • Hepatitis A and Typhoid (both routine for East Africa).
  • Rabies pre-exposure (optional, recommended for >2 weeks in country or close-animal work).
  • Tdap booster.
  • Discuss with your travel clinic 6–8 weeks before departure.

Money and payments in Uganda

  • Currency: Uganda Shilling (UGX). USD widely accepted in lodges and tour payments.
  • Card acceptance: lodges yes, restaurants and tour operators yes. Cash needed for tips, porters, market shops.
  • ATMs: in Kampala, Entebbe, Mbarara. Limited around Bwindi.
  • Bring USD in clean, post-2013 bills (older bills are sometimes refused).

Connectivity

Wifi at major lodges is reliable for email; bandwidth limits video calls. Local SIM cards (Airtel, MTN) at the airport are USD $5 with 5 GB data for USD $7. WhatsApp works everywhere.

Insurance — non-negotiable

Buy comprehensive travel insurance with:

  • Emergency medical evacuation (USD $1M+ coverage).
  • Trip cancellation (covers permit and lodge non-refunds).
  • Coverage explicitly listing “trekking above 1,500m” or “gorilla trekking” — many policies exclude this by default.

Recommended providers: World Nomads, Allianz Travel, Travel Insured Plus, IMG Global. Cost USD $150–300 for a 10-day trip.

Packing for the trek

Standard kit (boots, gaiters, gloves, rain jacket, daypack, 2L water, packed lunch). Add for US travellers:

  • Universal adapter (Uganda uses UK 3-pin plugs).
  • Power bank — long days off-grid.
  • Insect repellent with DEET 30%+.
  • Quick-dry towel.
  • Spare passport photos for emergency document needs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time of year to fly from the US?
For trekking conditions: January, February, June, July, August, December. For cheaper permits: April, May, November.

Should I fly into Entebbe or Kigali?
Entebbe if doing Uganda only (more flight options). Kigali if doing southern Uganda only and prefer the shorter drive.

How early should I book international flights?
6–9 months out for the best fare. Less than 4 weeks out, premium economy is sometimes cheaper than economy because of last-minute pricing.

Can I use frequent flyer miles?
Yes — Star Alliance and Oneworld both serve Entebbe. Award seats are easier to find on Ethiopian (Star Alliance) than Qatar (Oneworld).

Is jet lag a problem for the trek?
Manage it with two recovery days. Most trekkers feel fine by trek day 3.
