What Is Habituation and What Makes the GHE Different?
Habituation is the process by which wild gorilla families are gradually acclimatised to human presence over two to three years of daily controlled contact. UWA researchers and trackers visit the same gorilla family every day, maintaining a specific distance that decreases gradually as the gorillas become comfortable. At the end of the habituation process, the family is calm enough for tourist visits — they ignore humans at close range and continue natural behaviour. The GHE allows visitors to accompany the research team during active habituation: you are present at a stage where the family is partially but not fully habituated. This produces a more dynamic, less predictable encounter than a standard trek with a fully habituated family. The gorillas may react to the group’s presence more directly — displaying, moving away briefly, circling back — before settling into natural behaviour. The GHE is the most raw, most genuine, most research-connected gorilla experience available.
Where Is the GHE Available?
The Gorilla Habituation Experience is available exclusively in Rushaga sector, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Two gorilla families are currently in the habituation process and available for GHE visits: Bikyingi and Bahati. A maximum of four visitors per GHE family per day are permitted (compared to eight for standard trekking), meaning a maximum of eight GHE permits per day across both families. This strict limit is what makes the GHE genuinely intimate — four people in the forest with a gorilla family and the research team, versus eight people for standard trekking.
What Happens During Four Hours With the Family
The GHE day begins at the same 8:00 AM briefing time as the standard trek, with a longer orientation and introduction to the research process. The walk to the gorilla family follows the tracker’s morning location report. Once the family is found, the four hours begins. The research team takes behavioural data throughout — noting feeding plants, social interactions, movement patterns, and physiological indicators. The GHE visitors observe alongside the researchers, receiving live commentary on what is being observed and recorded. The gorillas, being semi-habituated, may react differently at different moments of the four hours — moving away when disturbed, returning when curiosity wins. You experience the family’s full morning arc: waking from night nests, morning feeding, social grooming, the alpha silverback’s positioning, infant play. The variety of behaviour observed in four hours is not achievable in sixty minutes.
GHE Permit Price and Booking
The GHE permit costs 1,500 USD per person — 700 USD more than the standard gorilla trekking permit. With eight permits per day maximum (four per family), the GHE has the most constrained availability of any Bwindi experience. For peak season dates (June to September, December), GHE permits typically book out two to four months in advance. For shoulder season, booking one to two months in advance is generally sufficient.
