July and August are Uganda’s peak gorilla trekking months. The long dry season provides the best trail conditions of the year: firm paths, limited mud, reliable morning weather, and the active movement of gorilla families through forest that is easier to navigate than in the rains. Every year, demand for July and August permits exceeds supply at most of the popular gorilla families, and travellers who leave permit booking until spring find that their preferred dates are no longer available. This is the guide to booking your 2027 July-August gorilla trek before that happens.
Why July-August Sells Out
The Uganda Wildlife Authority issues a maximum of eight gorilla permits per habituated family per day. With approximately ten habituated families available across Bwindi’s four sectors and Mgahinga, the total daily capacity across Uganda is under a hundred permits. In July and August, with the combination of Northern Hemisphere summer holidays, East African Wildlife Society sponsored trips, and school-holiday family travel, that capacity fills quickly. The permit for a specific family on a specific date in July or August 2027 may already be unavailable if you enquire in April or May.
The gorilla permit costs $800 USD for international visitors in 2027. The price is fixed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and does not increase with demand — there is no peak season surcharge on the permit itself, only on lodge accommodation and flights. But availability is finite, and the booking date determines whether you get the date you want or the date that remains.
When to Book for July-August 2027
Booking a July or August 2027 gorilla trek should begin no later than January or February 2027 for the best choice of dates, families, and sectors. For travellers with specific date requirements — who need a particular week because of flight connections, school holidays, or leave allocation — booking in late 2026 is not too early. The permit is secured at the time of booking, and no Uganda Wildlife Authority permit is issued without a confirmed booking through a licensed operator.
What to Book Alongside the Permit
Lodge availability in July and August follows the same pattern as permit availability — the best properties near the most popular trekking sectors fill quickly. If you are planning to stay at Gorilla Forest Camp, Mahogany Springs, or another high-demand property, the accommodation booking should happen simultaneously with the permit application. Your operator coordinates both.
