This 8-day route combines Murchison Falls, Uganda’s largest national park, with mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi, and adds rhino tracking at Ziwa and chimpanzees in Kibale on the way. Between them you have a strong chance of seeing four of the Big Five in the parks, plus white rhinos at Ziwa, along with gorillas, chimps and the Nile. Murchison and Bwindi are at opposite ends of the country, so the route travels down the western side rather than attempting the 10–12 hour drive in one day.

Days 1–3: Ziwa and Murchison Falls

Day 1: drive north from Entebbe or Kampala to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, about 3 hours, and track white rhinos on foot with rangers, then continue to Murchison Falls. Day 2: early game drive north of the Nile on the Buligi tracks for lions, elephants, giraffe, buffalo and Uganda kob, then an afternoon boat trip upstream to the foot of the falls. Days 4–5: Kibale and Queen Elizabeth

Day 4: drive south via Hoima and Fort Portal to Kibale, about 6–7 hours, along the Albertine Rift escarpment. Day 5: track chimpanzees in the morning, then continue to Queen Elizabeth for an afternoon boat trip on the Kazinga Channel. The chimp permit is US$250, rising to US$300 from 1 January 2027. Days 6–8: Ishasha, gorillas and return

Day 6: drive through the Ishasha sector, looking for its tree-climbing lions, to Buhoma on the northern edge of Bwindi. Day 7: gorilla trekking, from one to six hours or more, with an hour in the company of a habituated family; the permit costs US$800, or US$600 in April, May and November. Practical notes

This is an active trip with several long driving days, so a comfortable 4×4 and an experienced driver-guide matter. Book the gorilla permit first, then fit the rest of the route around it. To shorten driving, a charter flight from Murchison’s airstrips to Kihihi can replace Days 4–6, but you then miss Kibale and Queen Elizabeth. The leopard, which completes the traditional big five, requires the luck of a night drive encounter near the park boundary or a sighting during the late afternoon golden hour when the cats occasionally emerge from their daytime cover in the riverine woodland. Visitors who complete the 8-day Murchison-Bwindi itinerary without seeing a leopard have still seen more large mammal species in two days of Murchison than most week-long Kenya safaris produce.

The Murchison Falls section of the 8-day itinerary contributes wildlife diversity that the gorilla trekking visit’s forest environment does not provide. The savannah mammals — giraffe, buffalo, elephant, the Uganda kob — visible from the vehicle on the game drive occupy an ecological context that is as foreign to the forest environment as the gorilla is to the open savannah.
