January is one of the best months for gorilla trekking in Uganda. It falls in the shorter dry season that runs from about December to February, so trails are firmer, days are often sunny and warm, and game viewing in the savanna parks is good. The permit costs US$800, and demand is high in the first week after the holidays and again later in the month, so book permits and lodges two to four months ahead. Showers are still possible in the rainforest, but they are usually short.
Weather in January
At Bwindi’s altitude, mornings are around 10–15°C and afternoons can be warm, in the low to mid 20s°C. January is one of the drier months, with fewer and shorter showers than in the rainy seasons. Dust can build up on dirt roads, and skies are often clear in the mornings, which is good for photography. See our guide to weather at Bwindi.
Trekking and safari in January
Drier trails make the trek easier, though Bwindi’s slopes are always steep and a porter, at about US$15–20, is worthwhile. Gorillas are tracked every morning. Savanna parks such as Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls are good for game drives, and Palearctic migrant birds are present until around March. January suits a combined gorilla, chimp and wildlife safari; see our 7-day itinerary.
Booking for January
The first days of January are part of the holiday peak, and demand stays fairly high through the month. Book the permit first, then a lodge in the same sector; Rushaga usually has the most availability. New Year’s Day and Liberation Day on 26 January are public holidays, but parks run normally. See our guides to permit availability and public holidays.
What to pack
Pack light, breathable long-sleeved clothing, a light rain jacket, a warm layer for early mornings, broken-in boots, gardening gloves, sun protection and insect repellent. See our packing list, compare December and February, or read our guide to the best time for gorilla trekking.
