The Bushaho Gorilla Family was habituated for tourism as part of the development of gorilla trekking in Bwindi’s Ruhija sector — the park’s easternmost and highest-altitude trekking zone. Their home range occupies the dense, cool montane forest of Ruhija, where they share the landscape with the Bitukura, Kyaguliro, and Oruzogo families in one of the most gorilla-rich forest environments in Uganda. The Bushaho family’s habituation opened additional permits in a sector that had previously offered very limited daily visitor capacity, contributing to Uganda’s ability to protect mountain gorillas through the permit revenue that funds anti-poaching operations, ranger salaries, and community conservation programmes.

With approximately 11 members, Bushaho is a medium-small family whose composition gives trekkers a complete cross-section of mountain gorilla social structure: a dominant silverback, adult females at various stages of reproductive life, juveniles old enough to be independent but still within the family’s orbit, and infants who remain in constant physical contact with their mothers. This range of ages and social positions ensures that a Bushaho encounter contains visible examples of the full range of gorilla social behaviour within the permitted hour.

The Silverback and Family Character

The Bushaho silverback leads his family through the Ruhija forest with the quiet authority characteristic of well-established gorilla leaders. Rangers who have tracked this family since their habituation describe a male whose confidence in his role translates directly into the family’s calm around human observers — the silverback’s ease with the daily ranger presence flows through the entire group, and trekkers benefit from a family that continues its morning routine without the periodic nervousness that can affect less thoroughly habituated groups.

The Bushaho family is particularly noted by guides for the quality of inter-individual relationships visible during encounters. Grooming sessions between specific females, the particular bonds between mothers and juveniles, and the blackbacks’ careful navigation of their relationship with the dominant silverback are all observable and interpretable during the hour. The Ruhija Trekking Experience

Bushaho treks depart from Ruhija headquarters each morning. The sector is two to three hours from Kabale by road through the scenic Kigezi highlands — a drive that is itself a significant part of the Ruhija experience. Ruhija’s forest at 2,000 to 2,600 metres has a character quite distinct from Buhoma or Rushaga: cooler, denser, more ancient in atmosphere. The early morning light in Ruhija, filtered through mossy old-growth canopy and frequently misted, gives the forest a quality that has led many photographers to describe it as the most atmospheric gorilla trekking environment in Uganda.

Trek duration to reach the Bushaho family varies between one and four hours. Terrain involves the ridgelines and valley bottoms of high-altitude Bwindi — physically demanding but rewarding, with the forest itself providing constant points of interest during the walk: endemic birds calling in the canopy, small primates in the trees, the extraordinarily diverse ground flora of mosses, ferns, and wildflowers that lines the trail. When the Bushaho family is located, the transition from trekking to encountering is immediate and total — the forest suddenly contains gorillas, and everything else falls away.

Combining Bushaho with Ruhija Birding

Ruhija is East Africa’s finest birding location for Albertine Rift endemics, and travellers who arrive a day before their gorilla trek can spend the afternoon birding the forest tracks around the sector headquarters. Species possible in a half-day of birding include the African green broadbill, Grauer’s warbler, Shelley’s crimsonwing, strange weaver, and blue-headed sunbird — a list that would represent career highlights for many birders. Best Time to Trek

Year-round availability. June–August and December–February offer the driest conditions and most popular trekking windows. Ruhija is cool to cold in all seasons — warm layers at departure are non-negotiable. Wet season treks offer lush forest and better permit availability, but trail conditions require sturdier footwear and more careful footing on steep sections.
