Entebbe International Airport: Complete Arrival Guide 2027

Home / Travel News, Stories & Tips / Tales from the Mist / Entebbe International Airport: Complete Arrival Guide 2027

Arriving at Entebbe International Airport for your Uganda gorilla trekking safari is the start of an extraordinary adventure. Entebbe Airport is a manageable and well-organised facility, and with the right preparation your arrival process will be smooth and straightforward. This complete guide covers everything you need to know about arriving at Entebbe International Airport in 2027 — from landing to reaching your accommodation.

Entebbe Airport Overview

Entebbe International Airport (IATA code: EBB) sits on a peninsula jutting into Lake Victoria, approximately 35 kilometres southwest of Kampala. The airport serves as Uganda’s primary international gateway with international arrivals and departures, domestic flights, and charter operations all handled from the main terminal complex. The airport has been significantly modernised in recent years with improved facilities and processing infrastructure.

The airport is relatively compact compared to major African hubs, making navigation straightforward. Most arriving international passengers complete the immigration and customs process within 30 to 90 minutes depending on arrival congestion. Flights from European and Gulf hubs typically arrive in the early morning, midday, or late evening.

Immigration Process

On arrival at Entebbe, all passengers proceed through passport control. Immigration queues are separated into East African Community (EAC) citizens and all other nationalities. EAC citizens (Ugandan, Kenyan, Tanzanian, Rwandan, Burundian, South Sudanese, DRC nationals) have a faster lane.

Non-EAC passport holders require a visa. If you have an e-visa (strongly recommended and obtained before travel), proceed to the e-visa lane and present your passport and e-visa confirmation. If you need a visa on arrival, join the visa on arrival queue where the fee ($50 for single entry) is paid in US dollars, Euros, or by credit card. Processing time for visa on arrival can be 30 to 60 minutes at busy periods — this is why pre-obtaining the e-visa is strongly recommended.

Yellow Fever Vaccination Check

Uganda requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for all arriving travellers aged 9 months and over. Your yellow fever vaccination certificate (the yellow International Certificate of Vaccination) must be presented at immigration or at a health check desk before reaching the immigration counters. Travellers without valid yellow fever documentation may be refused entry or required to be vaccinated at the airport. Ensure your certificate is valid before travel — yellow fever vaccination is valid for life under WHO guidelines.

Baggage Collection

After clearing immigration, baggage claim is in the main arrivals hall. Carousels are assigned by flight and displayed on arrival screens. Baggage handling at Entebbe is generally efficient with most bags arriving within 20 to 30 minutes of landing. Porter services are available in the baggage hall for a small tip. Luggage carts are available free of charge.

Customs and Declarations

After collecting baggage, proceed through customs. Nothing to declare: use the green channel. Items to declare (commercial goods, excessive cash, restricted items): use the red channel. For most tourists with personal luggage, cameras, and sporting equipment, the green channel is appropriate. Professional photography or video equipment brought for commercial purposes may require a temporary import permit — contact the Uganda Revenue Authority in advance if relevant.

Currency and Cash

Uganda’s currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX). ATMs are available in the arrivals area and accept Visa and Mastercard. Currency exchange bureaux are also present in the arrivals hall. US dollars are widely accepted for major payments like gorilla trekking permits, but small transactions require shillings. Bring a combination of dollars and withdraw local currency as needed.

Meeting Your Driver

Most safari operators arrange airport transfer. Your driver will be waiting in the arrivals meet-and-greet area beyond the customs exit holding a sign with your name or your operator’s name. Mobile phone coverage is available immediately outside the terminal for last-minute coordination. Ugandan SIM cards can be purchased at the airport for local data and calls.
