Entebbe International Airport is the gateway through which almost every international gorilla trekking visitor enters Uganda. It sits on the northwestern shore of Lake Victoria, 37 kilometres southwest of Kampala, and handles all international scheduled services to and from Uganda. For a traveller arriving on a long-haul flight with a multi-day safari itinerary ahead, the arrival process and onward logistics matter enormously. A smooth Entebbe arrival sets the tone for the whole trip. This guide covers everything you need to know from wheels down to the road south.
Arrival: immigration and customs
Entebbe’s terminal handles a moderate volume of international traffic and is generally efficient by East African standards, though arrival times vary significantly by flight schedule. The early morning window — when overnight flights from Europe and the Middle East land — can produce longer queues at immigration. Budget 30 to 60 minutes for immigration processing at busy times; 15 to 20 minutes at quiet periods.
Immigration requires a valid passport with at least six months remaining validity, a completed arrival card (distributed on the aircraft or available at immigration counters), a visa or visa approval letter, and proof of yellow fever vaccination. The yellow fever requirement is enforced seriously — inspectors check the original WHO yellow vaccination booklet at immigration. A digital record on your phone is not an acceptable substitute. If you do not have proof of vaccination, you may be required to receive a vaccination at the airport before being admitted, at additional cost and delay.
Visas can be obtained in advance through the Uganda e-visa portal (visas.immigration.go.ug) — this is strongly recommended as it eliminates the need to queue at the visa-on-arrival counter, which can be slow when several international flights arrive simultaneously. Print your visa approval letter and carry it alongside your passport. East Africa Tourist Visas covering Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda are also available through the e-visa portal and are the best option for multi-country itineraries.
Customs after baggage collection is typically straightforward for tourist arrivals. Declaring items of high value (cameras, electronics, binoculars) is advisable, though inspections are not routine for leisure travellers. Do not carry any controlled substances and be aware that Uganda prohibits the importation of pornographic material. Safari gear, camera equipment, and personal items pass through without issue.
The airport facility
Entebbe International Airport underwent significant expansion and renovation in the early 2020s under Chinese-funded infrastructure development and is considerably more functional than its reputation from older travel guides might suggest. The arrivals hall is air-conditioned, has adequate seating, functioning bathrooms, and several ATMs dispensing Ugandan shillings (UGX). Currency exchange bureaux are available both airside and after customs.
Exchange a modest amount of cash — around $50 to $100 USD equivalent in UGX — at the airport for immediate needs such as tips, sim card purchase, and small expenses. The exchange rates at the airport are reasonable. Larger currency exchanges are better done at Kampala’s bureau de change offices or banks, which typically offer better rates. ATMs at the airport dispense UGX against international Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards.
A local sim card is worth buying at the airport if you plan to use mobile data during your stay. Airtel and MTN Uganda are the dominant carriers. Airtel’s airport kiosk is typically available in the arrivals area. Purchase requires your passport for registration. Data packages for a week are affordable and provide useful connectivity for navigation, communication, and emergency contact throughout the safari.
Transfer to Kampala or onward journey
From Entebbe airport, most gorilla trekking itineraries proceed either to a Kampala hotel for the first night or directly onward toward the southwest. The drive from Entebbe to central Kampala takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on traffic — the Entebbe Expressway, completed in 2018, has dramatically reduced journey times when conditions allow, though the approach roads to the expressway can be congested during Kampala rush hours (07:00–09:00 and 17:00–20:00).
Tour operators almost always arrange airport collection as part of their packages. Your driver will be waiting in the arrivals area with a sign bearing your name. If arriving independently and using a taxi, agree a fare before entering the vehicle — metered taxis do not exist at Entebbe airport, and negotiating before departure protects against inflated fares. The standard airport-to-Kampala fare for a private taxi is approximately 80,000 to 120,000 UGX ($20–30 USD) depending on destination and negotiation skill.
If your itinerary begins the morning drive toward Bwindi on the day of arrival, note that the full journey from Entebbe to Bwindi (Rushaga or Nkuringo sectors) takes eight to ten hours by road. Most operators recommend an overnight in Kampala or Entebbe after a long-haul arrival rather than beginning an eight-hour drive immediately after international travel — fatigue significantly diminishes the pleasure of the scenic highland drive, and an overnight gives you the chance to rest and acclimatise before the journey south.
Overnight options in Entebbe
Entebbe has several good accommodation options for arrival nights, with the advantage over Kampala of being quieter, closer to the airport, and directly on Lake Victoria. The Boma Guest House is a well-regarded mid-range option with comfortable rooms, good food, and a peaceful garden. The Lake Victoria Serena Hotel is the high-end choice, with lakeside grounds and good facilities. Several smaller guesthouses in the Entebbe town area provide budget-friendly alternatives.
Entebbe town is also worth exploring in its own right. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (formerly Entebbe Zoo) houses rescued wildlife including chimpanzees and various bird species, and is a worthwhile two-hour morning visit. The botanical gardens on the lakeshore were established by the British colonial administration and have been immortalised in cinematic history as the location for several Tarzan films. The gardens are pleasant for an early morning walk before the main journey begins.
Domestic flights from Entebbe
For travellers with limited time, domestic charter flights connect Entebbe to airstrips near Bwindi, cutting the overland journey from eight hours to approximately one hour of flight. Aerolink Uganda is the primary charter operator serving the Kihihi airstrip (closest to Buhoma and Ruhija sectors of Bwindi) and the Kisoro airstrip (closest to Nkuringo and Rushaga). Charter flights are booked through tour operators or directly with Aerolink and are significantly more expensive than road transfer, but for travellers with one-week itineraries where road time must be minimised, they represent a genuinely practical option.
Domestic flights operate in small propeller aircraft (typically Cessna Caravan or similar) and are subject to weather conditions in the highland areas. Morning departures are generally more reliable than afternoon flights. Always build a buffer day at the end of a safari itinerary that relies on domestic charter connections to your international departure — mechanical delays or weather cancellations, while not common, do occur.
Departure: practical notes
Departures from Entebbe require arrival at the airport approximately three hours before international flights. Security and check-in processes are standard, with an airport departure tax included in most international ticket prices. The departures area has duty-free shops, a reasonable selection of Ugandan crafts and gifts, currency exchange, and restaurants. Internet connectivity in the terminal is variable — download any entertainment or offline maps before arriving at the airport.
On departure, ensure you have spent or exchanged all Ugandan shillings before leaving — UGX is non-convertible outside Uganda and East African Community borders, and airport exchange facilities offer poor rates for reconversion. Leave enough UGX for a last meal, tips for hotel staff, and any transport to the airport, then exchange the remainder before the final check-in.
Entebbe airport is not the most glamorous gateway in Africa, but it functions reliably for the volume it handles. For most visitors, the arrival process is smooth enough that the first real impression of Uganda is not the terminal building but the drive south from the airport — the red earth roads, the sprawl of Kampala in the hills, and eventually, after hours of driving, the first view of Bwindi’s forest ridgeline rising against the sky.
