Aerolink Uganda: the primary domestic carrier
Aerolink Uganda is the dominant domestic airline serving Uganda’s safari circuit. Operating a fleet of small turboprop aircraft — primarily Cessna Caravans and similar aircraft seating between nine and fourteen passengers — Aerolink connects Entebbe with Kasese (the nearest airstrip to Queen Elizabeth National Park), Kihihi (the airstrip closest to Bwindi’s northern Buhoma sector), Kisoro (for Bwindi’s southern Rushaga and Nkuringo sectors as well as Mgahinga), and Kidepo Valley in the far northeast.
Schedules are published on the Aerolink website and change seasonally. Flights operate three to five times weekly on most routes rather than daily. From Kihihi, the drive to Buhoma takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on road conditions.
The airstrip is a paved single runway set in Kigezi highlands farmland. Arrivals at Kihihi on clear mornings offer spectacular views of the escarpment descending toward the Albertine Rift. Several high-end lodges in the Buhoma area include airstrip transfers in their rates, with vehicles waiting when the flight lands. Departures from Kihihi can be affected by visibility — early morning mist in the valleys sometimes delays takeoffs by one to two hours.
Kisoro airstrip: gateway to southern Bwindi and Mgahinga
Kisoro airstrip sits at over 1,850 metres above sea level in Kisoro district, approximately 10 kilometres from Kisoro town. The altitude makes it one of the higher airstrips in the Aerolink network and subjects it to weather variability — cloud and mist can close the strip to arrivals at short notice, particularly in the afternoon. Morning departures and arrivals are considerably more reliable than afternoon connections at Kisoro.
From Kisoro, the road to Bwindi’s southern sectors — Rushaga and Nkuringo — takes approximately one to two hours depending on which sector you are visiting. The road climbs steeply through Kisoro’s cultivated volcanic hills before reaching the forest edge. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is accessible from Kisoro in approximately 45 minutes to the Ntebeko entrance gate.
Kisoro itself is a pleasant small town with a distinct Kiga cultural character. Kasese airstrip: gateway to Queen Elizabeth National Park
Kasese serves Queen Elizabeth National Park and is the domestic flight hub for the western Uganda safari circuit. From Kasese, lodges within Queen Elizabeth including the Mweya peninsula properties are approximately 45 minutes to one hour by road. The Kasese airstrip is larger and more consistently operational than the highland strips, making it a reliable connection point.
Many visitors fly from Entebbe to Kasese for Queen Elizabeth, drive between the park and Bwindi overland (approximately three hours on a scenic road through the Ishasha sector and Kigezi highlands), and fly out from Kihihi or Kisoro. This circuit avoids doubling back to Entebbe between parks and covers western Uganda’s two most significant national park experiences efficiently within a seven to ten-day itinerary.
Luggage restrictions and packing for domestic flights
The standard luggage allowance on Aerolink scheduled services is 15 kilograms per person in the hold and five kilograms carry-on. For visitors on tight budgets, the overland drive is entirely viable and provides its own rewards: the road from Kampala through Fort Portal, Kasese, and into the Kigezi highlands passes through spectacular scenery and genuine rural Uganda that the flight experience misses entirely. Many experienced Uganda travellers prefer the drive for at least one direction specifically because it grounds the safari experience in the broader landscape and cultural context of western Uganda rather than parachuting directly from airport to lodge to forest.
