The right Uganda gorilla trekking itinerary depends on your available time, budget, fitness level, and which additional experiences you want to include alongside the gorilla trek. This post provides three proven itinerary templates — a 5-day minimum, a 7-day standard, and a 10-day extended itinerary — each designed by operators who have run hundreds of Uganda gorilla trekking trips and know what works, what is too rushed, and what most travellers wish they had done differently.
The 5-Day Minimum Itinerary: Gorilla Trekking Only
Day 1: Arrive Entebbe International Airport. Airport transfer to Kampala hotel. Rest and acclimatise. Briefing on the trip ahead.
Day 2: Early departure from Kampala/Entebbe for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Road transfer (6 to 8 hours) via Fort Portal or Kabale, depending on sector. Option: break the journey with a stop at the equator monument or at Lake Mburo for a short game drive. Arrive Bwindi lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Gorilla trekking. Early breakfast, transfer to briefing point by 7:00 AM. Pre-trek briefing, depart into the forest. One hour with the gorilla family. Return to lodge. Afternoon at leisure — optional birdwatching, community village walk, or Batwa trail introduction.
Day 4: Return to Entebbe by road or charter flight. Optional Kampala city tour if arriving with time before dinner. Overnight near Entebbe airport.
Day 5: Depart Entebbe.
This itinerary is the minimum viable Uganda gorilla trekking trip. It works for travellers with very limited time. Its limitations: no buffer for flight delays, no secondary activity beyond the gorilla trek, and the long road transfer makes Day 2 exhausting. Consider upgrading the Day 2 transfer to a charter flight if budget allows.
The 7-Day Standard Itinerary: Gorillas Plus Queen Elizabeth
Day 1: Arrive Entebbe. Transfer to Kampala hotel. Rest, dinner.
Day 2: Drive to Queen Elizabeth National Park (5 to 6 hours). Afternoon game drive. Overnight at lodge on the Kazinga Channel.
Day 3: Morning game drive in the Ishasha sector (optional — tree-climbing lions here). Afternoon boat safari on the Kazinga Channel (hippos, Nile crocodiles, over 600 bird species). Overnight at Queen Elizabeth lodge.
Day 4: Drive from Queen Elizabeth to Bwindi (3 to 4 hours). Check in to lodge. Afternoon orientation walk or birding.
Day 5: Gorilla trekking day. Full day. Certificate ceremony. Afternoon relaxation.
Day 6: Optional Batwa Cultural Trail or second gorilla trek (additional permit required). Alternatively, forest walk with a Bwindi guide for birding and forest ecology. Return to Entebbe by charter flight (1 hour) — recommended for Day 6 to avoid a long road journey after the trek.
Day 7: Depart Entebbe. Optional morning Kampala city tour if afternoon/evening flight.
This itinerary is our most recommended for first-time Uganda visitors. It combines the gorilla trek with a quality savanna game viewing experience at Queen Elizabeth, includes a boat safari, and has sufficient buffer time at both parks to absorb minor delays without stress.
The 10-Day Extended Itinerary: Gorillas, Chimps, and More
Day 1: Arrive Entebbe. Transfer to Kampala. Rest.
Day 2: Drive to Kibale National Park (5 hours). Afternoon forest walk.
Day 3: Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale. Afternoon rest. Optional swamp walk for red colobus monkeys and L’Hoest’s monkeys.
Day 4: Drive from Kibale to Queen Elizabeth National Park (2 hours). Afternoon game drive.
Day 5: Kazinga Channel boat safari. Optional Ishasha sector visit (tree-climbing lions). Drive to Bwindi (3 to 4 hours). Overnight at Bwindi lodge.
Day 6: Gorilla trekking. Full day. Certificate.
Day 7: Batwa Cultural Trail. Afternoon birding with Bwindi specialist guide.
Day 8: Charter flight from Bwindi area (Kihihi or Kisoro) to Entebbe. Optional Kampala Backpackers afternoon.
Day 9: Mabamba swamp half-day trip from Entebbe (Shoebill stork — the most sought-after bird in Africa). Afternoon at leisure near Entebbe.
Day 10: Depart Entebbe. This is the finest Uganda safari itinerary available in 10 days: gorilla trekking, chimpanzee tracking, classic savanna game viewing, boat safari, cultural experience, and Shoebill birding. Contact us to design your 2027 version of this trip.
