You can plan a gorilla trekking trip to Uganda from scratch in seven days if you move efficiently and use an experienced operator. This guide walks through exactly how to do it — not in theory but in the specific sequence of decisions and actions that take you from “I want to trek gorillas in Uganda” to “everything is booked.” Follow it in order.
Day 1: Set Your Dates and Check Permit Availability
Before anything else, decide when you want to go. Gorilla trekking permits are date-specific. There is no point booking flights until you know whether permits are available for your dates. Contact us on Day 1 with your preferred date range (ideally a window of two to three weeks, so we can find the best available option) and your preferred sector (or let us recommend based on your fitness and preferences). We will confirm permit availability within 24 hours.
If your preferred dates have no permits available, we will tell you immediately and suggest the nearest available dates. If your dates are flexible, this stage is fast. If your dates are fixed (around a school holiday or existing international flight booking), confirm permit availability before purchasing any non-refundable flight tickets.
Day 2: Book Your Gorilla Trek and Pay the Permit Deposit
Once permit availability is confirmed, pay the permit deposit to secure your slot. The permit is the most constrained element of your trip — flights and accommodation can be adjusted, the permit date cannot. Pay the deposit first. We will submit your permit application to UWA immediately and send you confirmation within 24 to 48 hours. The confirmation will include a scanned copy of your permit allocation document, which you can use to book flights with confidence.
Day 3: Book Your International Flights
With permit dates confirmed, book your international flights to Entebbe International Airport (EBB). Entebbe is served by direct connections from London (Heathrow), Amsterdam, Dubai, Doha, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, and other major hubs. Allow at least one full day of buffer between your Entebbe arrival and your trek date — do not arrive the night before your trek and attempt it the next morning after a long-haul flight. Jet lag, dehydration, and fatigue all reduce your ability to manage a physically demanding forest walk.
Build a similar buffer before your departure flight. A trek that runs seven hours does not end before 3:00 PM. Do not book a flight leaving Entebbe on the same evening as your trek. Allow at least one full day between your trek and your departure flight.
Day 4: Book Your Accommodation
You need accommodation at or near Bwindi for at least two nights (one night before your trek, one night after). We recommend three to four nights to allow for optional activities (Batwa trail, birding, community visit) and to give yourself time to fully experience the Bwindi area. We can book accommodation as part of your package at negotiated rates. Alternatively, you can book independently — we will provide our recommendations by tier and sector.
If you are adding other parks to your itinerary (Queen Elizabeth, Kibale, Mgahinga), you will also need accommodation in those areas. Tell us your full itinerary scope on Day 1 and we will plan accommodation across all locations simultaneously.
Day 5: Arrange Transport
You need transport from Entebbe to Bwindi and back. Options: private charter flight (approximately USD 250 to 350 per person one-way, 1 hour, most convenient), shared charter (cheaper, requires coordinating with other travellers), or road transfer (USD 150 to 250 per person for a private vehicle, 6 to 8 hours, scenically rewarding but tiring). We arrange transport for all our clients and can advise on the best option for your budget and time constraints.
If you are combining Uganda with Tanzania or Rwanda, you will also need onward transport from Uganda — typically an international flight from Entebbe to Kilimanjaro or Kigali. Book these regional flights once your Uganda itinerary is fully confirmed.
Day 6: Sort Health and Travel Requirements
Yellow fever vaccination: required for Uganda. If you do not have a current certificate, contact a travel health clinic. The vaccination is usually available with short notice and is inexpensive. Malaria prophylaxis: consult your physician or travel health clinic — options include doxycycline, atovaquone-proguanil, and mefloquine with different side effect profiles. Start the appropriate course before departure. Travel insurance: ensure your policy covers emergency medical evacuation — this is the critical coverage for remote-area trekking. Uganda visa: apply online if required for your nationality. Uganda offers a 30-day single-entry visa and an East Africa Tourist Visa covering Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda.

Pack for the trek (see our dedicated packing list post for specifics) and for Uganda generally. Key items: waterproof boots, long trousers, lightweight rain jacket, sun cream, insect repellent, 2-litre water bottle, camera without flash, and any personal medications including your malaria prophylaxis.
