Uganda gorilla trekking permits 2026 — availability is tightening and here is what to do

Uganda gorilla trekking permits for 2026 are selling faster than at any previous point in the programme’s history. The combination of record-breaking social media exposure, major documentary releases, growing recognition in the luxury travel media, and a sustained increase in demand from new source markets has created a permit environment in which popular dates and sectors are selling out four to six months in advance — and in some cases further. If you are planning a gorilla trek in Uganda in 2026 and have not yet started the booking process, here is what you need to know about the current availability situation and exactly what steps to take to secure your permit before your preferred dates disappear.

Which months are most at risk of selling out

The months with the highest permit demand — and therefore the highest risk of your preferred date not being available if you delay booking — are June, July, and August, which represent the main dry season window that the majority of European and North American visitors prefer. Within these months, weekends and dates that coincide with school holidays in major source markets are most heavily booked. December and January are the second-most-constrained window, representing the shorter dry season that captures the Northern Hemisphere holiday travel period. The lowest-demand months — May, November, and early June — have better availability and are worth considering if your travel dates are flexible and permit availability for peak months is the constraining factor.

Which sectors have the tightest availability

Among Bwindi’s four trekking sectors, the Buhoma and Rushegura sectors — which are most accessible from the main approach road and which have the broadest range of accommodation options — have the tightest permit availability in peak season. Ruhija, at higher altitude with more demanding terrain, has somewhat more availability because fewer visitors are willing to accept the additional physical challenge. Nkuringo, the most remote and most physically demanding sector, has the most consistent availability year-round — though even here, peak season dates fill up. For visitors whose travel dates are fixed, the sector with permit availability may determine the sector you visit rather than the other way around.

The five steps to securing your permit today

The process of securing a gorilla trekking permit through our team is straightforward and can be initiated immediately. Step one: contact our team with your preferred travel dates and sector, plus any flexibility you have on either. Step two: we check current permit availability across all sectors for your dates and confirm what is available. Step three: you confirm your preferred option and pay the deposit required to hold the permit — a small amount relative to the total permit cost, detailed in our booking terms. Step four: we secure the permit with Uganda Wildlife Authority and confirm your booking in writing with all relevant details. Step five: we build the rest of your Uganda safari itinerary around your confirmed permit date, coordinating flights, accommodation, and any additional activities you want to include.

What you risk by waiting

The direct consequence of not starting the booking process now is that your preferred dates may not be available when you eventually contact a tour operator. Permit availability does not hold — once a date is sold, it is sold. Unlike accommodation reservations, which can sometimes be obtained close to travel dates at premium prices, gorilla trekking permits for specific dates are either available or they are not, and no amount of willingness to pay more changes the situation once a date is full. The traveller who waited six months to book and found their July dates sold out is a story our team hears regularly. The traveller who secured their June permits in January and had the experience exactly as planned is the story we prefer.

Contact our team now — phone, email, or the contact form on this website — with your preferred travel dates for 2026, and we will check current availability and start the booking process within hours. Do not let permit availability make the decision for you.
