Summer Holiday Gorilla Trekking Uganda: School-Age Kids at Home, You Go

Home / Travel News, Stories & Tips / Tales from the Mist / Summer Holiday Gorilla Trekking Uganda: School-Age Kids at Home, You Go

The summer school holidays — six weeks in which children are at home, childcare is at a premium, and the possibility of adult travel contracts to almost nothing — is, paradoxically, also one of the best periods for gorilla trekking in Uganda. July and August are Uganda’s peak dry season months: the trails are firm, the weather is reliably clear, the gorillas are active, and demand for permits is at its highest. If your children are with a partner, grandparents, or a trusted carer while you take the trip you have been putting off, June-September is the window to do it.

Why Summer Is Peak Gorilla Season

Uganda’s long dry season runs from June to September. In Bwindi’s mountain forest, this means firmer trail conditions, less mud on the steep slopes, better visibility in the forest, and more reliable morning weather for the trek. The gorillas’ behaviour is unaffected by the season — they eat, rest, and move year-round — but the conditions for the humans trekking to reach them are significantly better in the dry season. For first-time trekkers, or for anyone who wants the most physically comfortable experience, June-September is the recommended window.

The gorilla permit costs $800 USD for international visitors in 2027. The high demand in July and August means that permits for those specific months need to be booked four to six months in advance — so from January or February for a July trek. If you are planning to use the summer holiday period for a gorilla trip while the children are covered at home, start the booking process in January 2027.

The Quick Trip Format

A gorilla trekking trip does not require a long holiday. A five-day itinerary — travel out Thursday night or Friday, two nights near Bwindi, trek on Saturday or Sunday, return Monday — works as a long weekend extension and can be done without significant leave. Many parents use the first or last weekend of the school holiday, when grandparents or partners can cover childcare, to make the trip happen in a compressed format.

For a fuller experience, seven to ten days allows the gorilla trek plus a game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park or a chimpanzee tracking day at Kibale, rounding out what Uganda offers beyond the gorillas.
