Choosing your gorilla trekking sector is one of the most important decisions in planning a Uganda gorilla trek. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Rushaga, Ruhija, and Nkuringo — and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park has one. Each sector has different gorilla families, different terrain, different accommodation, and a different overall experience. This guide gives you a complete comparison so you can make the right choice for your trip in 2027.
How Sectors Work
Each sector is a separate entry point into Bwindi or Mgahinga. The gorilla families that trek in each sector’s territory are assigned to that sector — you cannot trek the Rushaga families from Buhoma, or vice versa. Your permit is issued for a specific family at a specific sector on a specific date. Sector choice and gorilla family choice happen together when you book. The $800 permit price is the same across all sectors.
Buhoma Sector: The Classic Choice
Buhoma is the northern sector and the most established. It was the first sector opened for gorilla trekking in Bwindi and has the longest history of habituated families and developed tourist infrastructure. The gorilla families in Buhoma include the Mubare group (one of the oldest habituated groups in Uganda, habituated in 1991), the Habinyanja group, the Rushegura group, and the Katwe group. Buhoma has the most developed trail infrastructure, the most accessible paths from the briefing point, and the highest concentration of quality accommodation.
Who should choose Buhoma: first-time trekkers, senior travellers, families with older teenagers, anyone with moderate fitness who wants the most accessible terrain, and travellers for whom accommodation quality and choice matter. Buhoma is also the best sector for combining gorilla trekking with other Bwindi activities — the Buhoma Community Walk and the birding trails around the sector are among the best in Bwindi.
Buhoma is accessed from Kabale via Butogota (approximately 2 hours from Kabale on a partially unpaved road) or from Kihihi airstrip (approximately 1.5 hours by road).
Rushaga Sector: The Permit Availability Sector
Rushaga is the southern sector and the largest in terms of gorilla families. It has more habituated families than any other Bwindi sector, which means more permit slots and better availability — including for last-minute bookings and for popular peak-season dates. The gorilla families at Rushaga include Nshongi, Mishaya, Bweza, Busingye, Mucunguzi, and others. Rushaga is also the sector where the Gorilla Habituation Experience (GHEX) permits are available ($1,800 USD per person for foreign non-residents), which allow four people to spend four hours with a gorilla family still in the habituation process.
Who should choose Rushaga: travellers who are booking late and need available permits, travellers who want the GHEX experience, and travellers approaching from the south (Rwanda border crossing, Kigali connection). Terrain in Rushaga is moderate. Accommodation has improved significantly in recent years with several quality mid-range and luxury lodges now operating near the sector.
Rushaga is accessed from Kabale via the southern route (approximately 1.5 hours from Kabale) or from Kisoro (approximately 2 hours).
Ruhija Sector: The Birder and Off-the-Beaten-Path Choice
Ruhija is the eastern sector and the highest point in Bwindi at approximately 2,350m. It is the most remote sector, sees the fewest tourists, and is the primary destination for serious birdwatchers targeting Albertine Rift endemics. The gorilla families at Ruhija include Bitukura, Oruzogo, and Kyaguriro groups. The terrain is more demanding than Buhoma and the weather is colder and more frequently misty.
Who should choose Ruhija: birdwatchers (specifically those targeting African Green Broadbill and Grauer’s Rush Warbler at Mubwindi Swamp), travellers who specifically want a less-visited, quieter sector experience, and physically fit trekkers who are comfortable with higher altitude and more demanding terrain. Accommodation in Ruhija is more limited — a small number of guesthouses and one quality lodge. Ruhija is not the first recommendation for general trekkers but is excellent for the specific traveller who knows why they want it.
Ruhija is accessed from Kabale via a different road from Rushaga — approximately 2 to 2.5 hours on a partially unpaved road through highland farmland.
Nkuringo Sector: The Dramatic Setting Choice
Nkuringo sits on the southwestern rim of Bwindi at altitude, with unobstructed views across the Virunga volcanoes toward DRC and Rwanda. The scenery is the most dramatic in all of Bwindi — volcanic peaks visible from lodge terraces, forest disappearing into mist, exceptional sunrise and sunset views. The gorilla families at Nkuringo include the Nkuringo group and others in the southwestern forest.
The significant caveat: Nkuringo is the most physically demanding sector. The descent from the rim into the forest and the return ascent is steep and can be exhausting, particularly in wet conditions. The gorilla families in Nkuringo historically move significantly, meaning treks here tend toward the longer end of the duration range. This sector is not recommended for senior travellers with limited mobility, people with significant fitness concerns, or anyone who needs a shorter or more predictable trek duration.
Who should choose Nkuringo: fit, active trekkers who prioritise scenery and uniqueness over convenience, photographers who want the volcanic backdrop, and travellers combining Nkuringo with a Lake Mutanda stay. Nkuringo is accessed from Kisoro (approximately 2 hours on very rough road) or from the southern side.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park: The Single Family Option
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a small park on the Uganda-Rwanda-DRC border, dominated by three Virunga volcanoes. It has one habituated gorilla family: the Nyakagezi group. This group is fully habituated but historically mobile — it has moved between Uganda and Rwanda at various points. When it is in Uganda, Mgahinga treks are available. Permit availability at Mgahinga is more limited than Bwindi and availability of specific dates depends on where the Nyakagezi group is located.
Mgahinga’s main attraction beyond gorilla trekking is golden monkey tracking ($60 USD per person) and volcano hiking (Mount Gahinga, Sabyinyo, Muhabura). The gorilla permit is $800 USD — same as Bwindi. Mgahinga is accessed from Kisoro (approximately 15 minutes), making it the closest Ugandan gorilla park to Rwanda.
Sector Selection Decision Framework
First time, general fitness, best infrastructure: Buhoma. Need permits quickly or late booking: Rushaga. Want GHEX experience: Rushaga. Serious birdwatcher: Ruhija. Dramatic scenery, fit and active: Nkuringo. Combining with Rwanda or golden monkeys: Mgahinga or Rushaga. Connecting from Rwanda/Kigali: Rushaga or Mgahinga. Combining with Kibale chimps: Buhoma or Rushaga (both accessible via road to Fort Portal).
