When Is the Low Season?
Uganda’s low season for gorilla trekking roughly corresponds with the two main rainy periods: March to May and October to November. These months see higher rainfall in the Kigezi Highlands where Bwindi is located, making the forest wetter during treks and the roads more challenging after heavy rain. The trade-off — lower visitor numbers, lower accommodation prices, more available permits — is valued differently by different travellers.
The wettest months are April (peak of the long rains) and October to November (short rains). March and May are transition periods that can go either way. Some years the rains arrive late or leave early; others they are prolonged and heavy. The unpredictability is real.
The Permit Price Does Not Change
The $800 gorilla permit is fixed year-round by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. There is no low season discount on the permit itself — it costs $800 in April and $800 in August. The savings available in the low season come from accommodation and operator pricing, not from the permit.

Mid-range lodges near Bwindi typically offer discounts of 15-30% in the low season compared to peak season rates. On accommodation that costs $300 per person per night in August, a 20% low season discount saves $60 per person per night — $120 per person for a two-night stay. What the Low Season Experience Is Actually Like
The forest in the rainy season is not a hardship experience for most trekkers — it is a different experience. The vegetation is lushly green, the light filtering through wet leaves has a quality that photographers specifically seek, and the forest sounds are different — rain-muffled, punctuated by the drip of water from canopy to undergrowth. The gorillas are no less present and no less impressive; they are simply wetted by rain like everything else in the forest.
The practical challenge is the trail conditions. Bwindi’s steep terrain can be slippery in wet conditions, and some sections require more care and effort than the same sections in dry weather. Good waterproof boots, walking poles, and waterproof bag covers for cameras are essential in the rainy season; porters are even more valuable for assistance on wet trails.
The Best Low Season Timing
Within the low season, the transition periods around the rains — late February to early March, and late September to early October — offer the best combination of lower prices and reduced rainfall probability. These are weeks when the accommodation discounts apply but the rains have not yet peaked, giving a reasonable chance of good forest conditions with the cost benefits of the off-peak period.
