Christmas in the same place, with the same people, in the same weather, eating the same food — or Christmas morning in a Bwindi forest lodge, and Christmas Day in ancient rainforest with wild mountain gorillas. If you have spent enough Christmases doing the standard version and you are ready for something that belongs in a completely different category of experience, Uganda in December is the answer.
Christmas Conditions in Uganda
December in Uganda falls in the short dry season, between the two annual rainy periods. Bwindi’s forest is at its most accessible in terms of trail conditions, the weather in the mountain zone is cool and clear on most days, and the gorillas are active. The combination of peak season conditions with the symbolic weight of Christmas day in one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife environments creates a version of the holiday that is impossible to replicate by staying home.
The lodges near Bwindi — places like Gorilla Forest Camp, Mahogany Springs, and Buhoma Lodge — offer Christmas lunches and seasonal hospitality that preserve some of the holiday’s comforts while surrounding them with an environment that is entirely unlike anywhere you will have spent Christmas before. The sounds outside your room are not Christmas music. They are forest.
The Permit
The gorilla permit costs $800 USD for international visitors in 2027. Christmas and the surrounding period is one of Uganda’s two peak seasons for gorilla trekking (alongside July-August), and permits for 24-27 December treks are in very high demand. Booking for Christmas 2027 should be done no later than June 2027 and ideally earlier. Lodges in the period also fill quickly, so the full accommodation and permit package should be reserved as soon as your dates are confirmed.
Who This Is For
Christmas gorilla trekking works for couples looking for an alternative to the family gathering, for groups of friends who want a shared adventure in place of the usual festive routine, and for families with adults who are ready to spend Christmas somewhere genuinely extraordinary. It does not work for families with very young children who cannot meet the minimum age requirement for gorilla trekking (typically 15 years, per Uganda Wildlife Authority guidelines) unless the itinerary includes alternative activities for younger members.
