Uganda’s gorilla permits are priced in US dollars by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. The price is fixed — you pay the same whether you book six months ahead or six days ahead. Below we have converted both permit prices into 21 currencies so you can plan your budget without guessing at exchange rates.

The Two Gorilla Experiences

Both permits grant you access to mountain gorillas — a species numbering fewer than 1,100 individuals on earth. The habituation experience is the rarer opportunity: you spend four hours alongside gorillas still becoming comfortable around humans, accompanied by researchers who document the family’s daily life.

Why Are Prices Quoted in US Dollars?

The Uganda Wildlife Authority has always set permit prices in USD. This is standard practice across East African conservation areas — the Ugandan shilling fluctuates, and pricing in a stable international currency protects the conservation fund that pays rangers, trackers, and community programmes surrounding Bwindi. Rwanda’s gorilla permits ($1,500) are also USD-denominated, as are Kenya’s national park fees.

When you pay by card, your bank converts at the rate on the day of payment. If you pay cash in Uganda, operators accept USD at the quoted rate. Most tour operators also accept payments in euros and British pounds at a pre-agreed rate — ask when you book.

Low Season Permit Prices: April, May and November

In February 2026, the Uganda Wildlife Authority introduced discounted gorilla permit rates for the low season months of April, May, and November. These rates are designed to encourage travel during quieter months while keeping the experience accessible.

Important conditions: Low season permits cannot be rescheduled. If you book a low season permit, you commit to that date. The discounted rate is final — no date changes once booked. This is different from peak season permits, which can sometimes be adjusted with sufficient notice.

Low season has real advantages beyond the price. April and May bring rain that keeps the vegetation lush and the forest deeply green. Gorillas tend to move less and stay lower in the forest — often making sightings easier, not harder. November sits between the two peak seasons and offers a pleasant balance of good weather and reduced crowds. Photography in the low season often yields richer, more atmospheric results than the bright, crowded high season.

Is the Price Worth It?

The gorilla permit is expensive by any measure. But context helps. Mountain gorillas are one of the rarest primates on earth — the entire wild population numbers around 1,100 individuals. Access is strictly managed: each habituated gorilla family receives a maximum of eight visitors per day for exactly one hour. There are no replays, no virtual versions, and no other place on earth where you can stand in a forest and watch a silverback lead his family through the undergrowth at close range.

A significant portion of every permit fee goes directly into the communities surrounding Bwindi — schools, healthcare, and crop-protection schemes that give local farmers a reason to protect rather than encroach on the forest. When you pay the $800 permit, you are not only buying access; you are funding the conservation infrastructure that keeps this population growing.

Uganda’s standard permit at $800 is considerably cheaper than Rwanda’s $1,500, while offering access to a larger gorilla population across more habituated families. The habituation experience at $1,800 has no equivalent elsewhere — Rwanda does not offer a comparable programme.

What the Permit Does Not Cover

The permit price covers your gorilla tracking time only. Budget separately for the following:

• Park entry fees — approximately $40 per day per person for Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
• Porter fees — $15–20 per porter (strongly recommended for steep terrain)
• Tip for rangers and trackers — $20–30 per person is standard
• Accommodation — from $80/night at budget lodges to $800+/night at luxury forest camps
• Ground transport — Bwindi is 8–9 hours from Kampala by road, or 1 hour by charter flight from Entebbe

When to Book

Permits sell out in high season — June to September and December to February. If your travel dates fall in these windows, book at least three months ahead. The habituation experience has only four permits per day and sells out further in advance — book six months ahead regardless of season.

In low season (April, May, October, November), permits are more available. Many trekkers find that low season produces better wildlife photography: the foliage is lush, the light is softer, and the gorillas tend to move less and stay lower in the forest.
